Farscape

by: Klaus Schulze, Lisa Gerrard

Release Date August 26, 2008
An exciting collaboration between two visionary artists. Operating in the musical field you could call gothic new age. Beautiful and spiritual and at the same time open to the darker sides of our minds (and the world we live in).

Klaus S. is of course a master sculptor of deep and interesting soundscapes. While Lisa Gerrard quite simply has a stunning voice and a stunning technical mastery of her vocal powers. Sounding at times like a Wagnerian heroine, a Middle East belly dancer or a new age goddess.

The music is varied, covering a wide range of moods and atmospheres. Suited for meditation, fantasy journeys, explorations of inner space.

Essential and profound.

CD-Charts Music : Complete Go Sessions

Complete Go Sessions

by: Stomu Yamashta's Go, Steve Winwood, Al Dimeola, Klaus Schulze

Release Date April 19, 2005
I have Go and Go Live on vinyl. Many years ago a good friend and Stevie Winwood fanatic turned me on to this album. To me it's like the "Lost Pink Floyd" album. Like the sequel to "Dark Side of the Moon." It's every bit as spacey and every bit as well composed and well played (Maybe even better).
I have yet to pick up the complete Go Sessions, but will as soon as the budget allows. I just listened to the LP's the other night after not hearing them in years. They hold up well. This is a "band" I'd love to see reunite and tour!

CD-Charts Music : Kontinuum

Kontinuum

by: Klaus Schulze

Release Date July 17, 2007
I got this disk via Amazon download. I had previously acquired Moonlake as well, and had really grooved out on Moonlake--digging its more beat-oriented electronica feel overlaid with the distinctive "world music" vocalizations going on in several of the Moonlake pieces.

Kontinuum, however, has a very different feel. No electronica beat vibe; not as much reliance on world music-esque vocalizations. In a way, I think it harkens back to earlier motifs in Schulze's 80's work, where there are recurring riffs onto which other layers are added--maybe a bit more "flowing" rather than "driving", if I can use these adjectives to separate the type of music on these two disks.

There's not any underlying drum beat, and no reliance ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Timewind

Timewind

by: Klaus Schulze

Release Date January 16, 2007
Klaus Schulze's 1975 album "Timewind" is a classic in German Electronic Music. The album has gone on to be an influence to many other electronic musicians such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Steve Roach and even Kitaro.
31 years after its original release, "Timewind" is now remastered and reissued with the best sound quality ever. Also included is a bonus disc that includes two outtakes from the recording sessions as well as a rare track from 2000.
The entire "Timewind" album was recorded live in Klaus Schulze's place of residence at the time - an abandoned barber shop which Klaus converted into a recording studio and living space. There were no computerized synths or keyboards at the time and because all of the music was recorded directly to a 2 ... Read More:

Mirage

by: Klaus Schulze

Release Date February 01, 2005
Everybody has described this magnificent album, but nobody pointed out an important detail:

I.
The first track Velvet Voyage is a different mix than the original version! The original is even more desolate, oppressive, and wintery. Like a real white-out. There's even a few faint sounds of vocoder during the intro, giving the music an alien beginning.

This new mix is - as far as Velvet Voyage goes - a more lively version, different sounds appear more clearly, specially after the 13 minute mark. The new mix of Velvet Voyage made it closer to Crystal Lake than the original was.

So one could say that while the original Velvet Voyage is a real white-out, an oppressive Antarctic blizzard, this new version is like an ... Read More:

X

by: Klaus Schulze

Release Date February 22, 2005
Released in 1978, X (the tenth album by Klaus) is a magnificent album of electronica that features loads of spacey, gothic sounding analog synthesizers and subtly haunting moods. Based on the liner notes, the album was recorded as a score for a film (entitled Barracuda) so Klaus had a larger recording budget than normal. In fact, the extra finances were used to incorporate a string section here and there - it works very well and sections of the string parts were looped (i.e. via tape loop). Joining Klaus once again on a full drum kit was Harold Grosskopf - they work wonderfully together on this album.

Klaus plays an impressive assortment of analog synthesizers on this album including big moog synthesizer, PPG synthesizer and sequencer, minimoog, ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Irrlicht

Irrlicht

by: Klaus Schulze

Release Date June 06, 2006
I haven't found any electronic music like Irrlicht. Only Cabaret Voltaire came close to making music that intrigues me as much as Klaus Schultze's first album.

On paper it should sound awful. There are no synthesizers, just a screwed up organ that only made a low bass note and lots of fuzzy noises. The orchestra was recorded by Schultze on a cheap cassette recorder about a mile away, and the conductor insisted on TALKING to the orchestra during the whole recording despite Schultze begging him to shut up. The rest of the noises are cheap percussion and whatever else Schultze found laying around that made noise.

All this junk comes together to make "sound" that's completely unique and unsettling. The one-note bass organ gets your attention immediately. ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : In Blue

In Blue

by: Klaus Schulze

Release Date April 26, 2005
Schulze's work is often lumped in with the electronic trance offerings which pile up every month from infinitely less talented individuals, but to me he is much more than that.

I love his music. I find it energizing, stimulating, exciting, creative, unsettling -- the very opposite of so much synthesizer music from the past and the present. He deserves to be taken a lot more seriously, though he himself often seems to be content to be defined as producer of dance, chill-out and trance tracks for gilded youth. Yet the ghost of J.S. Bach can be seen dancing through these luminous passages.

Anyway, that apart, I only ever recommend music that I deeply enjoy and that I think others will enjoy, and "In Blue" is definitely a source of pleasure! Among my other favourites are ... Read More:

Cyborg

by: Klaus Schulze

Release Date September 12, 2006
While I'm not normally a fan of background music, I guess this Klaus Schulze album provided a decent enough listen. For the most part, I felt the songs were too long, and lacking enough interesting ideas. Some of the sound effects were rather upfront and annoying too. But there WAS also lots of softer and more relaxing parts that dominated the majority of the music. It was alright I guess, but not something I will ever purchase.
