CD-Charts Music : 'Round Midnight

'Round Midnight

by: Kenny Burrell

Release Date August 18, 1998
Kenny Burrell never had the same recognition as Wes Montgomery. But this often happens with a great musician who stays true to their music and refuses to go commercial.

With selections like "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Make Someone Happy", "I Think It's Going To Rain Today", "Since I Fell For You", "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life", "Blues In The Night", and Joe Sample joining in on "Round Midnight" nothing could be more sublime!

Even today as Kenny performs, his music is as brilliant as ever. As of this writing, Kenny is still going strong performing his great and soulful songs. A must-have cd for any Kenny Burrell fan.

Introducing Kenny Burrell: The First Blue Note Sessions

by: Kenny Burrell

Release Date June 27, 2000
This 2-CD set collects 3 early Kenny Burrell LPs, one of which was only issued in Japan. The original INTRODUCING is here, and features Kenny with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers (b), Kenny Clarke (d) and Cabdido (cga). TAKEELA is the definite highlight of that date - a fantastic tune taken up tempo with Candido's congas the icing on the cake. VOLUME 2 is the second LP and adds Frank Foster on tenor sax with Flanagan, Oscar Pettiford (b) and Shadow Wilson (d). Flanagan is a magnificent player on both albums. CHEETA is the highlight on VOLUME 2. The third LP is K.B. BLUES, out on LP in Japan only, and overall might be the best of the 3 LPs. Hank Mobley (ts) Horace Silver (p) Doug Watkins (b) and Louis Hayes (d) join Burrell, and the results ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane

Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane

by: Kenny Burrell, John Coltrane

Release Date March 21, 2006
Coltrane played with Mile, the Duke, Monk, and Saunders, and some time was spent with Shepp and Dolphy for sure. With each, Coltrane modified his sound to remain distinct yet give a more full experience when accompanying, or in duet with, these other musicians. That's why on this album you get Coltrane playing mainsteam swinging jazz: he's playing alongside Burrell, not Jimi Hendrix or Sonny Sharrock. One reviewer stated that this is the Coltrane album to buy last, only after you own all of his others (or sometime like that). Not true. The ballads are sensitive, just as Coltrane was sensitive to the art of Johnny Hartman. But if you want Coltrane blowing a lot of 1/32th notes at full volume, this isn't it. Who is the leader here? I don't ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Bluesy Burrell

Bluesy Burrell

by: Kenny Burrell With Coleman Hawkins

Release Date March 18, 1997
This CD contains the original Moodsville LP issue of BLUESY BURRELL, with an additional bonus track from a different date thrown on. Four of the tunes pair Burrell with Coleman Hawkins, to excellent effect. TRES PALABRAS is wonderful; both Hawk and pianist Tommy Flanagan shine here. In fact, as usual, Tommy Flanagan adds immensely to the success of this date. Hawk is in great form. Contrary to the review below, my copy's sound was excellent - no hiss at all. A most enjoyable CD.

Blue Bash!

by: Kenny Burrell

Release Date April 27, 1999
This CD is wonderful. It is the combination of Jimmy Smith on Hammond B3 and Kenny Burrell on guitar. There are no suffocating string arrangements, no big band drama drowning out the talent, no lead sax in the spotlight, no LSD (lead singer disease) hamming up the vocal. There are just the blessed sounds of two of the true masters of jazz. I completely recommend this CD for its listening pleasure.

If you like this one then try Organ Grinder Swing as well. It has the same line-up and this CD and if anything Jimmy Smith plays with more fire. If you really like Kenny Burrell I also suggest you try to find a copy of Soulero.

Release Date July 01, 1991
This is another great hard bop session with Rudy Van Gelder at the helm. Doesn't get much better than this - everyone is in top form - be sure to get the 2004 Prestige/New Jazz remaster - the sound quality is unbelievable.

Blue Lights, Vols. 1-2

by: Kenny Burrell

Release Date July 15, 1997
This is an excellent album. The previous review gave you a complete insight in what you'll find in this recording so I'll not spend my time telling you who's there and who's not. I can add that this album is so well recorded that it almost doesn't seem a live album. It seems a studio blowing session! It seems that the audience had been abducted by aliens! They didn't make a move, a shout, a breath! There's only music here. People? I dont't know! Maybe they went to the bathroom for the entire sets, I don't know! There's alot to shout and to get electrified here, but no one opens his mouth here! Extremely quiet people! Every tune here is really streched out and the solos are outstanding. All the guys played great in these nights. This album does not even ... Read More:

Soul Call

by: Kenny Burrell

Release Date June 20, 1995
I'll stand in line with the previous reviewer. Although I love everything from Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa to Bird & Diz to Ornette Coleman to Latin and beyond, blues inflicted jazz has always been a path to my heart. Guitarists Kenny Burrell and Grant Green are two amazing guiatarists who infect jazz with an innate sense of blues. Or I might could say, infect blues with an innate sense of jazz, as that might be more of an accurrate statement. People don't have money to buy several records from all the wonderful artists who deserve the acclaim and album sales. And I wouldn't argue someone sticking with Midnight Blue as their KB album for the proverbial island trip; however, if you do have extra money you want to spend on a jazz album (at least for guitar ...
