.............never heard of Karryn Allison until just now? I am nearly 60 years old and love love love "musica brasileira" from almost anyone who can pull off a good recording. This CD is just amazing, and I've heard lots of artists try to record these songs.
I spent 2 years in Brasil many years ago and loved what I heard so have always loved the music. Karryn has a great voice and I am going to go seek out other things she has done.

Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane

Karrin Allyson is my wife's favorite jazz singer - which simply says that there's no accounting for taste, (but if that sounds like the beginning of a negative review, read on). To my ears, Ms Allyson's voice is a little too thin, a little too wispy, a little too limited in range, a little too little - and seeing her live at least half a dozen times, hasn't changed my opinion. But she makes the most of what she's got, has great diction, and has what Glenn Astarita calls, "near flawless phraseology." Bottom line: Great singers don't necessarily have great voices. Ms Allyson is a great singer.

I guess I would rate it 5 stars if it weren't for the really bad accent on Corcovado and So Danco Samba.
For me it ruined a otherwise perfectly good record.

I Didn't Know About You

If ever you thought that with the pasing of such greats as Ella and Sarah the art would be lost with them, you can rest easy. Karrin Allyson can do it all. My personal favourite tracks are "Stompin at the Savoy" and "Pack Your Suitcase Blues" but then I like it to "swing" and these tracks sure do that. That said I enjoyed every track on this CD. The song selection is great! And don't forget the "musos". Karrin has great backing from them which makes it all work.

Karrin Allyson (first name pronounced Car-IN), really delivers on this disc.

The album contains several jazz standards, such as "Stompin' at the Savoy", "How High the Moon", and "Night and Day". These are mixed with newer music, such as "Samba '88" and the sad, moody French song "Azure-Te".

The selections are clever. By weaving the newer music with classic jazz tunes, it allows the listener a new yet comfortable jazz experience.

Wild for You

I heard this recording in the background while dining outside in a lovely wine bar setting. Wow, I thought, good stuff. After downloading this via Amazon, I can now say, it's only "so, so, material". Nothing orginal or creative. I love covers; however, expect the covers to reflect the performing artist's own personality and style. Ms. Allyson just doesn't do it for me, and hey, I live in Kansas City. Overall, I find her vocal work as nothing special and the arrangements to be less than out of the ordinary. I say, if you wish the standards, the classics to be "today" try Holly Cole. Perhaps, Ms. Allyson should also take a listen.
