"Greatest hits" collections, especially of an artist as prolific as Judy Collins, are risky things. This is particularly true in her case since her style has varied so much with the years. Still, this compilation includes most of what I regard as the high points among her many albums, and several iconic tracks: I would certainly place her versions of Pete Seeger's "Turn, Turn, Turn," Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne," and Ian Tyson's "Someday Soon" in this category. "Both Sides Now," one of her biggest radio hits, sounds a bit dated now with its late 60s mix of rock drumming and symphony strings; still, Collins' voice is at its smoothest here and her sincerity is hard to resist, as is also the case with her elaborately produced versions of the traditional ... I first heard Judy Collins when I was about 15 years old. My Grandparents had one of her albums. Most teens don't like their Grandparents music and I was usually no exception! Hearing her was like hearing the music of my soul.. I use to buy all her albums, and listened to her for many years. Time and music changed..and some reason, I thought of her again recently and got this CD. It was like revisiting a part of my soul that I thought I forgot about! I still knew all the songs by heart and still loved "Sons of.." the best. Amazing Grace and Farewell to Tarwathie mellows me out so! I don't know why I lost her, "but now I'm found"- Judys voice and choices of songs are like listening to a flowing crystal stream.. I can't imagine anyone not loving her just listening ... Read More:

One of Judy's very best. A brilliant selection of great songs by great songwriters with some of her finest vocal performances. Almost plays like a concept album. The rendition of Cohen's "Suzanne" is unforgettable. Also Weill's "Pirate Jenny," a tour de force, and the "Marat/Sade" are colorful pictures painted with words and music. This is a superbly crafted and magnificently arranged album.

How can you possibly have the best of the best of Judy Collins and not include Sunny Goodge Street? No Thursday all-nighter in '76 was complete without Sunny Goodge Street and this best of anthology is not complete without it either.

Whether the listener can appreciate Judy's recent collection or not certainly depends on his or her approach to the music - if he or she comes more from a Beatles background or a Judy Collins background. Having been a longtime Judy Collins fan I can say that this album is very dear to me, though I can understand that not every Beatles fan might be happy with it, as it is neither a reinvention of the songs nor a particularly in-depth approach that would highlight the lesser known gems in their body of work.
So it may not be the most ambitious tribute ever paid to the Beatles, but it is definitely a pleasant one.
From the perspective of a Judy Collins fan I am particularly glad that she no longer seems to favor the glitzy Hollywood sound that has plagued many of her recordings ... Read More:

Although somewhat musically related to "Wildflowers" in it's orchestral stylings, Judy Collins' "Whales And Nightingales" has a slighter folk-rock tinge to it and is a more scenic, if you will, view of the world - encapsulating political, social, spiritual, ecological, and romantic concerns into its captivating musical panorama.
"Whales And Nightingales" opens with her compeer Joan Baez's "Song For David", her then-husband who was arrested and jailed for resisting the draft into Vietnam while she waited with their new-born son for his release. It is a powerful song; its power belied by its beauty, as it actually sounds apolitical. It is followed by Jacque Brel's "Sons Of", a solo-piano accompanied lullaby, of sorts, reminding us of the diversity of human life and how all, created equal, ... Read More:

"What better singer to interpret the dark, enigmatic songs of Canadian bard Leonard Cohen than the equally enigmatic Judy Collins?"asked one reviewer. I'll respond: Jennifer Warnes. Check out the 20th anniversary release of Famous Blue Raincoat with four new songs on it and most will agree with me . . . except of course the truly die hard Judy Collins fans (which in most cases I am but not when it comes to Cohen and Warnes). Sorry.
