I was thrilled when I was able to order this CD at such at great price $5.00 (even if it was an open package). When the CD arrived I popped the CD into my CD rom at work and as very disappointed to learn that the CD only contained a link to the website where the CD could be ordered. While I did get a prompt refund (Thanks Amazon), I believe someone got away with a steal (literally) by swapping the real disc for an apparant "Bonus" disc.
From now on I sticking with "Unopened" packaging, especially with the Christmas shopping season upon us.

Hairspray (2-Disc Collector's Edition Soundtrack)

Hairspray is an excellent film with equally excellent music. The music, which was composed by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman is a complete knockout and the ensemble cast deliver the goods. This collector's editon features an extra disc which features a song peformed by Nikki Blonsky, which was cut from the film, entitled "I Can Wait", as well as demos of songs which did make it into the film and various other recordings specially made for this album. The CD is great value for money and any Hairspray fan will love it! The album also includes a booklet containing lyrics as well as stickers and photocards of the cast of characters. Amazing! :]

Grease - Deluxe Edition

Is there any music lovers at Universal/Polydor? Is the money so important that you have to keep releasing the same old tired disc.
Love Is A Many Splendored Thing is chopped off at the end again!
Stop the insanity and release it thy way you know it should be. The way you would want to hear it. If the segway into Grease (reprise) is so important then include both on the disc. Please!!

This half-hearted soundtrack accompanied John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John's second pairing in the 1983 movie of the same name (obviously). Many people are oblivious to the film's existence which gives some idea of how well it was received back then. 20th Century Fox actually banned journalists from seeing the film! They didn't over-react...

Olivia has spoken at great length over the last 20 years about her other 2 mainstream movies, Grease and Xanadu, but clearly can't bring herself to elaborate on this clunker which effectively ended her big screen career. Olivia isn't the only bad thing about the film, old Travolta doesn't discuss it much either, but to my mind she was never worse as an actress than in TOAK. Grinning, gurning, squealing ... Over Here!

"Over Here!" is a delight. The songs are all great and in the style, beat and joy of the Big Band/World War II period. You can trace back (if you are serious minded) the songs that the Sherman Brothers are copying - for example, the "Wait for Me, Marlena" number is a take-off of Marlena Dietrich's big World War II number "Lili Marlene." However, just enjoy the music for the wonderful score it is. The good news is (as of Spring 2007), Donna McKechnie (of "A Chorus Line" and the original cast of "Over Here!") is going to be in a revival of "Over Here!" to open in Toronto and move to London. "My Dream for Tomorrow" would be to see "Over Here!" come back to Broadway! In the meantime, grab a copy of "Over Here!" and dance around the room as you celebrate the joyous music ... Read More:

I'm surprised I havn't heard anything about this album on fifthbucket. I must admit that I hadn't really thought much of John's singing until I found out he'd spent most of his youth in a plastic bubble. Yea, I know, it's hard to believe. But it's true. Saw a documentary about it the other day on Lifetime.

Not too surprising then that he's able to sell the hell out of the theme song from that movie. I was almost brought to tears with the following lyric: "leave us alone/we'd make it just fine/happy in a one-room shack/and we not look back/now wouldn't we." Dang that's heartbreaking.
