The music of the Four Seasons is timeless, but this recording enhances both the vocals and music. In Particular, the drums and bass are brought to the forefront without diluting the excellent vocals and yet gives a dynamic punch to songs recorded over 40 years ago. Highly recommended to anyone who lived in the era of 45's!!!

Of course there should have been much more. I remember there been a Metropolian Opera series called CAST ALBUMS- 100 YEARS that was put out for a limited time only and had like five volumes.
As Peter Filichia noted they left out SHE LOVES ME, BRIGADOON and SWEENEY TODD. Also nothing from PACIFIC OVERTURES, BIG RIVER, CHESS, CRAZY FOR YOU, JEKYLL & HYDE, TITANIC, THE SCARLET
PIMPERNEL, FOOTLOOSE- THE MUSICAL, THE FULL MONTY, URINTOWN...
But they couldn't have put it all. I would have done without Lee Remick's
"Anyone Can Whistle", because the show was a flop. I guess because it was Sondheim's first "serious" show...

Note that some of the recordings are not in stereo. While I expected that for some of the very old songs recorded in the 1920's to 1940's, I thought that the songs from the 1950's and more recent would have been recorded in stereo.

I bought this on a whim, as I like male choral groups. Am I ever glad I bought it! The music is soaring, and the voices are magnificent. I don't know all of the technical stuff about recording, etc.--I just know I love this collection!

Actually, its not! But it is a complete edition of the last recordings he ever made of the operettas in question.

The evidence of pre-war Sargent recordings (for instance his earlier "Princess Ida") shows that when he was a little younger he appoached these works with vigour and a stong sense of musical humour. As he mellowed (or got older, anyway) his interpretation of G&S definitely became more personal and reverent (or, if you like, slower). Whether you like this or not is absolutely a matter of taste. There are times when those of us more used to other productions may find a mellow geniality in the music rather than the razor sharp wit we are used to.
