Release Date November 06, 2001
As one in the Millennium Collection series from Universal Music, this mid-priced CD offers up a basic, no-frills gathering of Jimmy Ruffin's Motown recordings. All but one of his Soul label top-100 singles are here with one exception. With a relatively skimpy 11 tracks, the compilers could have squeezed in one more - the never-on-domestic-CD "Maria (You Were The Only One)", Ruffin's last top-100 charting single of the era. And speaking of omissions, the inclusion of "Hold On To My Love", a well-crafted pop hit from 1980 and Ruffin's only other top-10 chart entry, would have made this a true greatest hits collection. Being done for another label however, that may have involved licensing - an effort beyond the scope of ... Read More:

I bought this CD for ''Hold On To My Love'' because it is one of my best disco tunes from the early 80s but very rare on any CD. I knew this CD is re-recorded one, mainly thanks to the previous reviewer, so did't anticipated much. However, I have found the recording condition and sound quality is not bad and almost satisfactory, even though the original recordings are naturally better. The low price is also attractive.
Release Date 1990
Even though I was a young child when these hits came out, they are just as popular today as they were in 1966. Just like I grew up on this music, my kids have also through me. If you like: Cook Jerk(Capitols), Sunny(Bobby Hebb), This Old Heart of Mine(Isley Brothers), When a Man Loves a Woman(Percy Sledge), What Becomes of the Brokenhearted(Jimmy Ruffin), Love is a Hurtin' Thing(Lou Rawls), and more, you will love this cd.
I have personally collected Rhythm & Blues 1959 through 1973 when they were originally offered from Time Life. I tried to add the remainder of the collection to mine, which I believe is up to 1976, but unfortunately they are no longer being offered.
I am offering my entire collection from 1959 ... Read More:

Jimmy Ruffin's brother David was a member of the Temptations, so talent was obviously in the blood. However, Jimmy was somewhat fortunate to hit big with What becomes of the broken hearted. Diana Ross and the Supremes had recorded it and their version was intended for release as a single. Jimmy heard their version soon after it was recorded and begged Motown to let him record it, and to hold the Supremes version until they heard his. The rest is history. The original Supremes version, which is excellent and would have been a huge hit for them, appeared on one of their albums, but Jimmy's version, which is even better, was released as a single and became a huge hit in Britain, America and elsewhere.
The Supremes could afford to lose the ... Read More:

There's not much to say about the song selection that others haven't already covered. Simply put, it's excellent. One thing that made this essential for me, however, was the song "East Side West Side" which Ruffin recorded in 1966 as his intended follow-up to "What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted" but due to an argument with Berry Gordy, only ended up released in Australia until this was put together. My grandpa, Ron Welser, wrote the song with Terry Johnson, later of Flamingos fame. Further arrangements called for a third songwriting credit in the liner notes, but it's still all of my grandpa's lyrics there. I recommend listening to the entire collection, but why not that one first?

Although entitled Early Classics, this 18-track collection actually spans the period 1964 to 1970, with six tracks taken from the 1970 albums The Groove Governor and I Am My Brother's Keeper, the latter in partnership with his brother David Ruffin from the Temptations. This included the single Stand By Me, a revival of Ben E King's 1960 hit, and a terriffic cover of Tyrone Davis's Turn Back The Hands Of Time.
A further four tracks are taken from the 1969 album Ruff'n Ready, which provided him with some of his biggest hits such as Farewell Is A Lonely Sound and I'll Say Forever My Love. It also contained his unlikely, but very successful cover of 96 Tears, and the Motown standard You've Got What It Takes. Another track, I Will Never Let You ... Read More:
