Pearl

Janis Joplin's Pearl (1971) was recorded during September 1970. The last song they cut was Mercedes Benz, one of two songs on the album written by Janis. It was taped on Oct. 1, 1970, just three days before Janis suddenly died. It's sung a cappella, and a little tongue-in-cheek, but the song really does have some "social and political import" (as Janis says introducing the song) regarding materialism, economic class, and religon. It's really sort of sad to hear it sometimes, knowing that she unknowingly had only three days to live at the time. At the end of Mercedes Benz, Janis laughs and says, "That's it!".

Pearl is a great album, maybe Janis Joplin's best, and it highlights her talent in a variety of musical settings. And what talent ... Read More:

Done before the influence of the monied producers, you will hear a miracle. Artists doing what they love.

SHE MADE EACH SONG HER OWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Myra Friedman (Janis' first biographer) writes that at the time of JJ death she had od'ed 8x? and that as of recording this record she didn't have the maturity to lead a band, her first band being one where she was a member not a leader AND that at this time in her life she was so addicted she `could have been a junkie nodding in a doorway!!!!!!'
All that being said this makes this album even more amazing!
What writer Bob Christgau said is `JJ made a song her own merely by breathing on it, she didn't interpret the material!!'

One could prop up a full shelf of book ends with the history tomes written about Janis Joplin and the '60's. Janis is condisered the voice of a generation. She is what media offers as short cut to mid-late 1960's fashion, attitute, and an peek into San Francisco so-called hippie movement. She is now more an icon than a musician. This is not only wrong, but sad.

This first album has an interesting history and details can be found in most comprehensive RnR encylopedia. Briefly, in late 1966, early 1967, san Francisco was the epicenter of new music, styles, and a wided-eyed wonder how the record companies could capitize. Listen to this CD and understand the greatness of Janis Joplin's talent before the drugs owned her and her voice. In this CD, she calls out, sings out in LOVE and Pain and in loneliness. Listen to this and understand why she ended up with the drugs. A musical plea in every song for life and love and then, unfortunately, a solution that prevented either from happening and her songs live on in albums like this. You will not make a mistake in choosing this CD to understand the greatness of Joplin. Be prepared though that your heart will break along with hers but you will survive it. A great only one, if that is the case, Joplin CD to add to any music collection/selection!
