Blue and Sentimental isn't just one of Quebec's finest albums (alongside Heavy Soul); it's one of Grant Greens finest also. The sparse instrumentation coupled with such strong soloing makes them both stand out like three dimensional sound sculptures. The remastering has only emphasised this wonderful clarity.
Much has been mentioned about the ability of rock musicians to fashion songs out of riffs but none do it better than a Jazzman. Minor Impulse, written by Quebec, is `just a riff' that tumbles into a quintessential swinger of both their styles. It has a way of bringing people back to life and must be one of the greatest jazz tracks ever!
The drummer Philly Joe has also benefited from the remastering. The timbre ... Read More:

I can't improve on the comments of the two previous reviewers, but I can endorse their acclaim for this superb album. The telepathy between Quebec and Burrell is marvellous. This is a thoroughly stimulating work. I would also put in a word for Paul Chambers' Blue Note album "Bass On Top", where Burrell is again exemplary.

This is a great album. Ike Quebec is way too underated. He provided a sound that is both rough and sweet, the best of Ben Webster and Lester Young and yet there is a unique sound of his own,a yawp that had the emotion of Coltrane but could bend back into the lyric. There was a hint in this music of styles yet to come. His choice of material here is as always impeccable. There is so little of Ike that I beg for an RVG edition of Blue & Sentimental and Soul Samba.

I purchased this item from Amazon for a very dear friend who had not been able to find this artist through other avenues. He was elated with this CD.

This was the first Ike Quebec album I ever listened to and the sheer strenght of the man's tone pulled me in from the first note to the last. I would even go so far as to say that of all the big toned tenors (Ben Webster, Illinois Jacquet, Gene Ammons, etc.) Ike was the greatest, not solely because of the deep-spit-soaked-sound he could coax from his sax, but also for the wealth of ideas he had and the emotion which was always present. I've gotten everything else by Ike that I could find (including the wonderful "easy living")and I can say with out hesitation that Ike never put out an inferior product. Quite simply you can't go wrong with a blue note Quebec album.

It's hard to believe that no one has reviewed this great album. Ike Quebec was one of the best tenors to ever pick up a saxophone. He also pushed Alfred Lion and Blue Note from boogie- woogie to swing and then to the modern sounds of Monk, Powell and James Moody. He was out of the picture for most of the fifties with the jazzman flu but came back again in the late fifties and early sixties to make some wonderful recordings, such as "Heavy Soul", " Blue and Sentimental", " Easy Living" and " It May As Well Be Spring" before dying of cancer in January of 1963 at age forty four.
This terrific album however is about the beginning; the period from 1944 to 1946 when Ike put out one good record after another with some of best musicians of the day. While ... Read More:

All of Ike Quebec's bluenote albums are superior efforts, but "Blue and Sentimental" , along with "Easy Living" (which came after this one and before "Soul Samba") take the proverbial cake. Quebec mesmerizes with the languid-smokey-late-night-romance that he breathes deeply into his tenor saxophone. Without the accompaniment of the piano there is more space and time for Ike to move about in at his lazy leisure, and in place of it is the gentle strumming of Grant Green, who is at his most relaxed with Quebec at the helm. This fits the mood just right, and Ike Quebec is nothing if not a master at sustaining the blue tinted mood of a seemingly endless night. Images of laying in a bed with no sheets, late on a humid night, a gentle rain smearing the windows and the ... Read More:

First a note of caution. The Japanese import advertised only has six tracks. "B.G.Groove Two" and "I.Q. Shuffle" are not included. The original session included five blues numbers and three ballads but only three blues numbers and the ballads were chosen for an album that was never released. Later all five blues tracks were released as " Congo Lament". Then Blue Note released a CD with all eight numbers that is no longer available. My guess is that Blue Note Japan bought the masters of the album that was never released. Both CD's have the same cover art.
This is however a great album. Ike Quebec should have earned himself a place in the pantheon of jazz if one only considered his role in the education if Alfred Lion. He nudged Blue Note from boogie-woogie ... Read More:
