I'd heard the arguments both for and against "Wicked" (people love it or hate) so thought I'd have a listen. I really enjoyed it. So really great songs (and some fun ones too) as well as great singing. Even as I was listening to it for the first time I wanted to sing along!

Menzel's voice sounds fantastic, as always, on her new album. I could, and have, listen to her sing anything. However, the songs on this album vary widely in quality. Some of them were quite moving, but many just didn't get my attention, and a few, especially at the end of the album, just made me sad. I skip over the end of the CD now every time I listen to it. Still, I'll listen to many of the songs on this album over and over again just to hear her voice.

Rent is an important production, because it puts a face to the AIDS crisis and this was especially new when the production first came to Broadway. The music to Rent is wonderful and spans the breadth of the pop/rock genre. The Broadway soundtrack is as crisp of a recording as the motion picture soundtrack, but overall is a much better version. The Broadway version includes a number of humorous phone calls, additional songs and it seems have more feeling to them. All of the songs on the Rent soundtrack are great, but my favorites by far are Rent and La Vie Boheme. Both take a satirical approach to contemporary culture that is refreshing and needed when discussing the issue of "social outcasts". You can't go wrong with this recording of the Rent ... Read More:

idina's not an easy singer to love. i like it that she speaks her mind, but after a few songs, you kinda long for p.c., because she's definately not that, she says thinks most people only think...she's a smart-a--ed jewish soul sister from long island, who reminds me alot of laura nyro... her songs are trippy and poetic...her lyrics are deep...you have to listen to the songs more than once to get at what she's saying....and idina can definately sing...the only difference between " still " and her second album is that on this one, she doesn't give a rodent's posterior about getting played on the radio...basically, idina just cut her heart out and put it in the music...i can see why she'd be with a brotha...she's seems very cool and with it....on one song " think ... I am such a fan of Wicked, and Defying Gravity is by far one of my all-time favorite songs. But the CD singles - ugh. Apparently, what makes Defying Gravity such a captivating and enchanting song is the character from Wicked. The CD singles, with it's pop/hip hop versions has NONE of the charm of the stage version. Spare yourselves the heartache and stick with the Broadway CD.

Note that some of the recordings are not in stereo. While I expected that for some of the very old songs recorded in the 1920's to 1940's, I thought that the songs from the 1950's and more recent would have been recorded in stereo.

This is the perfect CD for those who love the music from the film, or even the Broadway show. I just bought this CD because I am new to "RENT". I first saw the movie 2 weeks ago and I am completely hooked!! I am also addicted to this CD, I listen to it atleast once a day (if not more)!! This is perfect for any "RENT" fans out there!!

Of course there should have been much more. I remember there been a Metropolian Opera series called CAST ALBUMS- 100 YEARS that was put out for a limited time only and had like five volumes.
As Peter Filichia noted they left out SHE LOVES ME, BRIGADOON and SWEENEY TODD. Also nothing from PACIFIC OVERTURES, BIG RIVER, CHESS, CRAZY FOR YOU, JEKYLL & HYDE, TITANIC, THE SCARLET
PIMPERNEL, FOOTLOOSE- THE MUSICAL, THE FULL MONTY, URINTOWN...
But they couldn't have put it all. I would have done without Lee Remick's
"Anyone Can Whistle", because the show was a flop. I guess because it was Sondheim's first "serious" show...
