I can't believe I'd never come across this guy before: this is the most amazing jazz flute I've ever heard! He's got a really phunky and soulful style. And the back-up band is A-list: Duane Allman on guitar and Donald "Duck" Dunn (formerly of Booker T and the MGs) on bass. If you don't own this album, you need it!

Herbie Mann is a jazz giant. His flute pours forth some of the sweetest sounds one would ever want to hear. This aptly-named album is the place in which to start exploring his music. Listening to this is guaranteed to whet the appetite for even more of his work.
It includes his most popular work, including "Memphis Underground", "Philly Dog", "A Man and a Woman" (accompanied by that incredibly exciting songstress Tamiko Jones). It also includes the coolest piece of music ever recorded, "Comin' Home Baby".

I love this album, especially side two with Chain of Fools and Battle Hymn. I first heard this on a $20 portable record player outside my barracks in Nam in 1969. We played side two over and over. Imagine hearing Battle Hymn in that setting. The record player was so bad that I thought all those Larry Coryell riffs from Chain of Fools were a Saxaphone. I've still never heard a guitarist pull off those kinds of intelligent but driving arpeggios before; not your standard guitar playing. Herbie excels at grooves, not notes so he doesn't have to be some technical machine zombie. Not many jazz albums can boast such a funky groove and rhythm section. I can still get people excited about this album who don't listen to jazz and have never heard ... Read More:

It was 1974 and I had been yearning for this sweet and innocent girl all summer. Finally, I got up the courage and soon she became my girlfriend. After several weeks, she shyly asked if I wanted to go up to her bedroom. Romantic visions swam in my head of both of us losing our virginity to each other as offerings of love. Once she closed her bedroom door, however, I found out she was neither sweet nor innocent. As she tore off her clothes and ripped at mine, she exposed that she was quite experienced and demanding. It was the longest afternoon of my life. Afterward, she laughed at my clumsiness and that I was foolish enough to think she was a virgin. The next day she tossed me aside like a spent shotgun shell.

1957 the year, bebop the music, you can't go wrong. You' can buyt these albums from 1957 with your eyes closed. Every album from the period is exceptional and this makes no exception. Very good dish is this one by Herbie Mann and Bobby Jaspar two flutists. Great the leaders but extremely inspired the other cookers too, Joe Puma guitar (very inspired, similar in his playing to Joe Pass, Jimmy Rainey, Kenny Burrell, the Jim Hall of the time ... clean very polite sound even without reverb), Tommy Flanagan (absolutly perfect as usual) piano, Wendell Marshall doublebass, Bobby Donaldson drums (a very straight and consistent section). The opener Tel Aviv is a medium tempo minor tune which sports some very exotic jazz minutes. It's a good experiment, 14 minutes flow without ... Read More:

I had this on LP years ago, so I remember it well. A great selection from Herbie Mann. Unfortunately, the quality of the cd is poor- the sound is sort of muddy, like a third-hand homemade tape. Too bad, because it really distracts from the cd. I have bought other cds from Amazon, which were remasters of older selections (such as Miles Davis) and was satisfied.

Let me begin by applauding AMAZON for allowing all of the frustrated, creative-expression-starved (like myself) to have a little outlet. What a shame that so few will ever experience this recording. If you like any of the better "Ambient" stuff from the past 20 years or so (such as Harold Budd & Brian Eno's "Pearl"), I'd put a Ben Franklin down that says you'll love this. Herbie Mann here strayed about as far as possible from the lounge-accessible genre of his other works. However, here's a warning: If you are looking for extreme displays of prowess and virtuosity, and especially if you tend to expect virtuosity to be synonymous with speed, this is not what you're looking for. But, if you are searching for a very unique, floating-above-the-clouds type experience, Herbie's ... Read More:
