Hammock never fails to dissolve the illusion of time and space, break down the matrix of structured rules, and unplug from the looping pattern of being. Cranking up the reverb until everything you do on the guitar sounds like you are drifting weightlessly in space goes back to Steve Roach's ambient excursions. It's is a great tool that can be very effective when used sparsely. Hammock has decided that they can make entire albums with this trick. Here's the rub: so can anyone else. A little of this goes a long way. Many of the tracks sound almost alike. Once you get over the novelty of the shoegazing, cavernous, outer space sounds, you listen desperately for some creative and original use of those sounds. I couldn't find them. Gets tedious quickly.

Raising Your Voice Trying to Stop an Echo

I first heard Hammock on one of my local college station's ambient/electronica programs earlier this year. The song was "Passing Away" and I listened through two more long (and I mean looong...) selections by other artists just so I could find out who it was. The song reminded me why I love this kind of ethereal music in the first place. Haunting tapestries and melodies that call out your name to join them. I figured they were local or just an artist or group with one cd that was hard to find. I was surprised and happy to be able to find it on Amazon (as well as other cds they've done) and now this entire album is on my iPod and gets much play. This is Chad's first album but it has been a long time coming, with a lot of thought and hard work put into it. If you appreciate the things that make Texas Music the best in Country Music, then don't pass this one over. Great songwriting, great voice, and a true love for what he's doing.
