Holst The Planets was a universal awakening for progressive rock musicians during the early 70's. Mars, the bringer of War turns up on King Crimson's The Devil's Triangle. Excerpts from Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity are found on NO OPPORTUNITY NECESSARY by Yes. The main melody is reproduced on Manfred Mann's Joybringer. The center section of Mars, Bringer of War is played by Lucifer's Friend on Summerdream. I have also heard snipets of Procol Harum and Univers Zero. I believe that David Bedford and Bernard Hermann were influenced as well. Holst the Planets is very educating and musicians have been studying the work for decades. I really enjoy this CD, it reminds me of the music I grew up. I was looking for something to just have on in the background, in my home during the day. I was disappointed that there were too many songs I didn't know, but this was the best choral music CD I could find so far that included both religious carols and non-religious carols.

Holst: The Planets

I'm a big fan of the Chicago Symphony. They've made some excellent recordings with Levine, but this isn't one of them. There are way too many mistakes, including a glaring error in "Mars" where the trumpets are completely apart from the snare drum in the quiet middle section of the movement. Legendary CSO principal trumpet Bud Herseth sounds like he's having a bad day, and time after time I'm lefting wondering why they didn't try another take. I'll stick to the Montreal Symphony Orchestra recording with Dutoit conducting.

Angel Voices: Libera In Concert

Outstanding! I love the music of boy's choirs, but so often the CDs also contain a lot of symphony, adult choirs, adult soloists, etc.... I don't want all that extra stuff, just the beauty of boys' voices. This is it! It's a bit comtemporary at times, but there is a nice mix with traditional music and the change from one to the other is barely noticable unless you are familiar with the selections. Soothing, relaxing, and gorgeous harmonies. I really love this, and so does my young toddler son. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Sing We Christmas

There's not much more I can add to the glowing reviews of this CD except to say that I'm surprised that "A un nino llorando" doesn't get a mention! It became my favorite on the album, even though the rest are excellent also.
"A Christmas Carol" is quite serene and nice, as well as "A Virgin Unspotted". Perfect! These guys are the musical male answer to Anonymous 4.
