From the Corner to the Block

by: Galactic

Release Date August 21, 2007
Last week in Boston I (somewhat unreasonably, don't tell my wife) splurged on a whole load of CDs when visiting Newbury Comics. One of these records is Galactic's latest album From the Corner to the Block. Having finally found the time to listen to it (don't you find it annoying that you can't load a CD on your iPod from a computer other than your primary? Guess I remember now why I'm not a big Steve "no-DRM" Jobs fan!), I wanted to share my first impressions with you.

I've talked about Galactic here in passing already, but I haven't reviewed any of their records (my favorite of which is and remains the awesome We Love 'em Tonight: Live at Tipitina's). In a way, From the Corner to the Block is both a result of the trend the band ... Read More:

Release Date September 01, 1998
This was the first album I bought of Galactic. I read an article about them in Bass Player Magazine, and they listed the Meters as one of their influences. I was not disappointed.

HAMPS HUMP is a great cover, different from the orginal but with a modern sound. Also QUIET PLEASE is 10 minutes of great jamming. I have heard many live versions of this song (as well as seen it performed a few times) and this CD version is the best.

All in all a quality buy if you like Booker T/Meters type music.

If, like me, you love to see Galactic live, do not buy this CD. I always felt like the Houseman was a necessary distraction for the band to keep the funk on the planet.

This album is all Houseman and no funk! That is a crime!

I don't mean that its not up to galactic funk standards, that would be one thing. I mean it is over-produced, the drums are so electronica they sound like drum machines. Are you kidding me, Stanton is funk soul of the band (the world?) and that it what they are reduced to?

Are you getting the point. Even the lyrics suck. Nothing more than repeated choruses.

Enough

Late for the Future

by: Galactic

Release Date April 04, 2000
I was looking at CDs on Amazon of various genres of music. I stumbled upon Galactic-never heard of them before. After listening to samples, I was really impressed. The CD arrived yesterday and I've been jamming to it since. A very creative mix of funk/jazz/rock/and who knows what else. Some albums have songs that sound the same. Not this one. You want a variety, you've got it. Some songs are smoother and more jazz oriented. And others have that gritty acid rock sound. Some sound like the '70's and others sound more modern. A warning-Galactic seems to be a band that goes through changes rapidly. The samples reveal that each album has a different sound to it. If you like one of theirs, don't buy another without sampling the tracks. I may get Cooling Off, but ... Read More:

THey really did a good job, this group. This cd is extremely well done. There is a cross between Cheap Trick, King's X and The Cult. The vocals are really good and there is a lot to entertain oneself with. Too bad they are no longer a group as of 2006.

If you follow the Louisiana FUNK music scene then you know about Galactic. They are currently without vocals and playing live for the most part, (2007). On this disc check out Century City first, it has one of the funkiest grooves in all of music. It is amazing what three chords, ( the funk bridge in this case ), can do in the hands of masterful musicians. Drummer is a solo artist, don't remember his name but can't forget his licks. Take your time. You will want to turn it up. Music for music lovers. They entertain...
