The first Mother's album was a huge step outside the normal rock and roll of the mid sixties, introducing it's audience to the Psychodelic era. This album is historic if nothing else. The music is an early Frank Zappa with the current culture influence, it sounds nothing like the later Frank and has rough edges.

Some of Frank's best work ever. Very deep introspection of his subject matter, superb music composition, and of course the muse of the satire that makes Frank so intriguing to listen to!

zappa at his peak. rock,jazz,avant-gard all in one album.
i was a teen when this came out, unlike me,this music never gets old.

Great collection with tolerably absurd lyrics. The never cross the line into being distractingly ridiculous. The melodies here are VERY strong, and FZ's guitar solo on Inca Roads, his best ever. Chester Thompson's drumming is loose and fluid and George Duke is doing his thing singing and playing brilliant keyboards. One of Zappa's absolute best.

Salud for ever. desde sudamérica ( CHILE ).

For me, and I speak for no one but me, this is an album about the first amendment. I tend to refuse to read other reviews about anything I review, though I do occasionally do it. For this, I have honestly not looked at another review. I only know that there are a ton and a half of 5 star reviews. All in all, this is a great album. It shows what happens when we let others decide what is right for us to listen to. There are many classic songs here. Come on, how can you not love "catholic girls", "crew slut", "dong work for yuda", "why does it hurt when i pee" or the "central scrutinizer" itself?
I think if one really listens to this album, one cannot help but love it. It is a smidge campy, a smidge campy, but all great music. This is Jazz Fusion ... Read More:

I dunno, boys and girls.
Dont get me wrong. I truly think Zappa is one of America's most overlooked musical geniuses. Screw the Beatles. He has been a beacon in a musical wasteland of overly produced, commericalized, imitative pop gunk that has poisoned us for years. I was glad to see him live and to own his recordings.
But for us true Zappa fans, (the ones who own a copy of Absolutely Free)this is kinda crappy. Frank resorts to dated high schoolyard humor, the music became more standardized glam-metal-reggae and left out the adventurous angular, polymetric twists and aural weirdness he was known for.
I think as his bands got younger and younger, Frank tried to keep up by resorting to their level of humor, which was kinda juvenile. ... Read More:

I also think this is overrated. Get YCDTOSA Vol 2 instead. 3 of the tracks are faded out. This is a remastered disc; the rest of those tracks should have been included when the 2lp set was released on CD. Also, Cheepnis was remixed, and it stands out from the rest of the disc by how much worse the sound is. I have no idea why they did that. The original is much better. Other than that, good performances and sound quality. But the remaster should have fixed those problems.

Muffin Man is certainly a Zappa classic. Though it is not as well-known as some of Zappa's other works, it certainly embodies many Zappa themes of mad scientists, conceptual continuity, and general absurdity. It also features some of Zappa's best guitar solos, and not to mention Captain Beefheart's vocals, harmonica solos and occasional saxophone and madness. This is one of the few albums (along with Hot Rats) that have both Zappa and Beefheart playing at the same time.
