Eric Idle Sings Monty Python

by: Eric Idle

Release Date March 03, 2003
You shouldn't look at this as a failure because Eric is only 1/6 of Monty Python, in fact it should be veiwed as a success because of that. I've always loved Eric more than the other Pythons, so I didn't mind the lack of the others here. Sure, a few songs felt lonely, but most were awesome. Eric is a very talented and wonderful man, who's heart is in the right place. I love this CD, and if you've ever enjoyed any Python song, you will too. Lets face it- who else did he need for the songs? He certainly carried The Lumberjack Song well without Michael. He didn't need John's awful out of tune voice (Sorry, but John is a HORRID singer) for the Eric the Half a Bee song. He was great. Buy this CD if you love Monty Python or Eric Idle. Don't buy this ... Read More:

Gilbert & Sullivan - The Mikado / ENO · Robison [Highlights]

by: Arthur Sullivan, W.S. Gilbert, Peter Robinson, Eric Idle, Lesley Garrett, English National Opera Orchestra and Chorus, Richard Angas, Bonaventure Bottone

Release Date May 18, 1999
The simple fact is that all the music of G&S's "The Mikado" cannot be squeezed onto a single, traditional CD.

This recording admittedly shoehorns in most of the score. Nevertheless, there are gaping omissions which are, to put the best possible face on it, misleading to the casual listener and acutely painful to a G&S fan. Among them are the missing overture, the trio, "I am so proud;" the madrigal, "Brightly dawns our wedding day" and the entrance of the Mikado with his Daughter-in-Law Elect treading right on his heels.

The performance is a perfectly competent one. If you want neither more nor less than a sound recording of this particular cast and you are indifferent to the disappearance of bleeding hunks, then this is the ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : The Mikado: Highlights From The English National Opera Production

The Mikado: Highlights From The English National Opera Production

by: Arthur Sullivan

Release Date April 16, 1995
I liked this production, though I like a traditional one better. And as far as "how the opera was meant to be performed", the comic patter role was generally not performed by an opera singer in the old days, but by a comic actor who could sing. Idle sings well enough (barely).

Personally, I didn't care for some aspects of the 1982 PBS/BBC Mikado. The Nanki-Poo sang well, but was badly made up and being a full head taller than anyone else came off rather Karlovian, in my not so humble opinion.

I have not yet seen nor heard a perfect Mikado.

I like this album, it includes a wide varity of songs fron the different operas. The sound quality is a bit like a record, which thew me off for a bit. If you like that sound then this is a good recording for, but if you want digital clarity this is not for you.
