This cd is worthy of its reputation, and is the last great recording by Eric Clapton. "Malted Milk", "Walkin' Blues", "Layla", which he was able to successfully alter to fit an acoustic setting, "Nobody Know You When You're Down & Out", the classic made famous by Bessie Smith and later covered by an aged Scrapper Blackwell, and "Tears In Heaven", are all exceptionally great tracks. "Hey Hey" is not one of Broonzy's better songs, so I'm not sure why Clapton chose to record it. "Old Love" is mediocre, but "Running On Faith" is wonderfully done. This disc would have been even better if Clapton would have performed the material solo, much like the legendary Bluesmen he so greatly admired used to do, day in and day out. The Road to Escondido

This cd is in the laid-back style of JJ Cale. At first, it seemed almost too uneventfull, but with repeated listenings, I've come to appreciate its subtlety more and more.

If you happen to be preparing for an MMA fight, this isn't likely to be your choice for training music. If, on the other hand, you want to get into a mellow mood and smell the flowers for a while, Road to Escondido will take you there in a flash.

I hope there will be a follow-up from these two terrific musicians.

Riding with the King

Not completely a crossover album, since Clapton is almost as closely associated with the blues as is King. But the age difference, difference in era, styles and voice types makes this a unique project.

Most interestingly is the heavy, "opinionated" musical styles of both artists. At times, there is an ungraceful colliding of voices as beef smacks up against beef. But instead of being uncomfortable and strange, it's like a couple of blues masters jamming together.

It's the guitarists who will likely find this album most interesting. The combination of steel & acoustic styles and sounds blend into a sweet sound, requiring only a snare drum and organ (Key to the Highway) to make it the perfect accompaniment to the soulful ... Read More:

You remember back in the 70's when it seemed like side one of a record always contained the most memorable songs? Well in this case it's the second side that has the best songs, specifically the final three- the emotionally brilliant "Let it Grow" with its ending you don't want to EVER end, the funky and bluesy "Steady Rollin' Man", and the poppy goodness that is "Mainline Florida". People can take their "I Shot the Sheriff" but it's NOT the best song on the album. Remember- hit songs don't equal best songs. Never has and never will.

First, let me say I have nothing against white blues guitar slingers. Love Bloomfield and Jonny Winter.

Second, as a "classic rock dude" Clapton can't be beat. Layla, and all that other stuff- its seminal classic rock. The guy almost defines the genre.

However, as a blues player, and especially as a blues singer, he is way overrated. People float him five stars because of the above classic rock god status. "Clapton? I love Clapton. Five stars."

The licks are ok, the solos are ok when he keeps them short. When he tries to go gonzo on a slow blues, he just sounds silly. Everything after Bluesbreakers was downhill for the guy blues-wise.

TYPICAL 1980'S CD BOXSET.

This was your typical 1980's boxset, when CD technology was first emerging. It contains about 60% previously released material, and 40% unreleased material (many of which should have never been released). Personally, I was not a fan of these releases, but I bought them anyway because the CD selections at the time were very limited.

Since this is an 1980's boxset, the sound quality is poor. Well, it isn't horrible, but it isn't very good. The sound is a little flat and muffled. It certainly, is not very good by today's CD standards.
