Having listened to EG for years and years and also seen her live more than once, I found this album to be her most poignant and conscious to date. With intelligence and passion, she is writing songs here which combine to decry the state of the world, not simplistically but with complex and thoughtful lyrics, yet also to endorse some small hope. The lyrics coupled with the very somber and gorgeous accompaniments really brought me to tears at times. She also really gets the difficulties of women in the world today, yet does not press. I was intrigued also by her echoes of old fifties tunes and lyrics which she has revised ironically for our times with very different and much more sobering takes. I was moved to tears at times and have never ... Read More:

This is my first Eliza Gilkyson CD and couldn't have picked anything better. Have already listened to it in full many times over. Sings two of her dad's songs and a couple others are tributes to him, and extremely well done. High quality band, timing, etc. Deserves five stars without hesitation. A very pleasant listening experience.

Paradise Hotel is my first CD of Ms. Gilkyson's. I am absolutely thrilled with my luck of finding such a gifted song writer and singer. She sings from the heart with a soothing, sometimes haunting voice, her lyrics are intelligent and sensitive. The song Jedidiah transports the listener into the American Revolutionary War from the eyes of a soldier and with the song Requiem we grieve with the victims of the Tsunami and Katrina. There is not a bad song on this whole album, what a rarity that is!
This CD is a masterpiece. And thank goodness, I finally found an artist who has some depth. Bravo!

On the follow-up to her wonderful "Hard Times in Babylon" Eliza Gilkyson expands with optimism on this somewhat more upbeat CD. There seems to be a more family vibe involved with "Lost and Found," down to son Cisco and brother Tony Gilkyson playing on several of the songs. The most touching of them is Eliza's tribute to her father in "Easy Rider." Her father, Terry Gilkyson, had a number of hits in the 50's and 60's with his group, The Easy Riders, and had written songs for singers as diverse as Dean Martin, Burl Ives and Walt Disney movies.
"The Jubilee Four and the Greenwood crew,
the Wellington Boys from 'Hullabaloo,'
Everybody wanted to love you but
they couldn't get through
Easy Rider."

If you thought genuine "protest" songs had gone the way of the Great American Folk Scare of the 1960s, then this record will get you back in the spirit. With sharp-edged lyrics and deceptively sweet melodies, Eliza Gilkyson offers a compelling mix of mostly original songs. Her voice lacks the power of the great women who defined protest music, Odetta and Joan Baez, but she is easy on the ears and brings great passion to her singing. The withering sarcasm of "Hiway 9" might get you arrested in someplace like Iran or Myanmar, and "Ballad of Yvonne Johnson" is painful in its evocation of child rape, racism, and bottom-of-the-barrel survival. "Dark Side of Town" is a bittersweet elegy in the Texas storyteller tradition, reminding me of Townes Van Zandt. She offers a break ... Read More:

Eliza Gilkyson comes from a musical family. Her father wrote both pop hits and Disney movie tunes, while her brother Tony played in an incarnation of X and was also involved with the movie "Walk The Line. To that end. "Hard Times In A Babylon" reflects Eliza's legacy. Like Lucinda Williams' "Gravel Road" CD, this album has a great deal to do with the drive to create, with the pitfalls, the hope and the redemption.
I saw Eliza play a show with Casey Chambers and Patty Griffin, and was enchanted by the two songs she played from "Hard Times In Babylon." First was "Beauty Way," which charts the course she took after her father. The best line is the description of the lure of fame and the disappointment of the illusion in the distance: "By the time I hit L.A. I was ... Read More:

Eliza has put out a number of great releases over the years but this one is way out front. Beginning and ending with spiritualism ala native American culture the entire CD carries great power. Every Song is a keeper. "Tangible Things" is perhaps her best compositition ever recorded. If your a fan and don't have this offering you need to seek it out. I can't give this CD Higher marks, it's that good!
