I was inspired to order this CD after seeing the movie La Vie en Rose about the colorful life of Edith Piaf.
My aim was to hear the real singer rather than the actress in the film.
This CD contained many examples of Ms Piaf's music. The sound quality was excellent and the music enjoyable.
Much of it was familiar, popular songs heard on the radio growing up. The singing is in French and there is no translation in the CD jacket, however this is a small defect.

Was not disappointed and in fact pleased to hear the voice of the sparrow, the music was great matching her superb voice. Thank you so much for taking me to France.

Very good reproduction of the original masters. I enjoy it over and over because I liked the movie and the music of that era. The actress deserved the Oscar I think. Todays musiic does seem like music to an old timer.

This is a collection that is worth having if you are a Piaf fan. You not only get her most famous songs but a good collection of those that are not as well known. All in all, it gives the listener a great feel for her miraculous voice and her Bohemian Style. You don't have to be French to love Piaf.

Hymn to Love: All Her Greatest Songs in English

Until I heard this CD, I was unaware that Edith Piaf had ever recorded any songs in English. I was aware, however that she didn't learn much English until very late in life. Someday, I hope to have heard everything she ever recorded. She died when I was 21, but I have enjoyed hearing her sing from the time I was about 12, maybe earlier. One does not need to understand the words in her songs to appreciate the power and feeling she puts into all her work; the meaning is clear enough.

this is a compilation of all my favourite Piaf songs, many of which I only had on old tapes, so I now have them on one CD. Marvellous as I have always thought of her, and I now listen uninterrupted as I drive along motorways, singing along desperately out of tune, but imagining myself in a Left Bank cafe.

I've heard Edith Piaf off and on through the years and pretty much cast a deaf ear. Her music seemed too remote from the African-American tradition of American Popular Song, whose composers and exponents--Berlin, Kern, Arlen, Gershwin, Rodgers, Crosby, Mercer--created a unique art as a result, primarily, of being drawn to "black" music. (Make no mistake about it: the distinctiveness of "classic" American popular song, or the so-called Great American Songbook, is not its European but its African-American indebtedness.) But the recent attention Piaf has received (I haven't seen the movie) led me to the realization I didn't even have a recording by her. The songs on this CD are actually a collection of a variety of performances that Piaf gave at the famous Olympia Theatre. The songs on this CD are all very excellent and what really comes through is Piaf's sheer joy in performing. There are some amusing moments where Piaf struggles to remember a detail about a song which are charming as they doubtless were when she was performing. Her skill as an incomparable artist comes through at this CD. It is the overall excellence of this series of recordings and others that have contributed to the status of Piaf as a major artist of the 21st century.
