I have been an Eagles fan since they first came out. This is a good album, but it isn't great. Don't expect the same edge and punch as in their '70s work. This is a softer, gentler Eagles, and I was disappointed. It is a keeper, and I will play it, but not as much as their original works.

For those who may not be familiar with contemporary improvisational music, there is a label out of Munich, Germany run by Manfred Eicher called ECM. Since 1969, they have produced some of the most beautiful and in some cases, the most highly influential records the genre has to offer. The records are generally done in roughly 3 to 4 days, leaving little room for studio tampering. Eicher is tyrannically opposed to overdubbing and over-producing, allowing the music to retain a very spontaneous atmosphere, as well as a very organic one. The music in most cases, reflects a wider world influence infusing not only elements of modern North American jazz, but classical European harmony and world folk.

Many people at the time did not think the band would play together again and the title says it all (of course they have done things after)

Great live renditions of Eagles Classics and even if you have the studio versions these are well worth having in your collection.

All you need to do is listen to the amazing version of Hotel California then you will get a sense of the level of this album.

I'm not going to compare Hotel California to any other album. This is simply their greatest album. Nearly flawless but, like the subject, not quite perfect.

I love the concept of California being heaven and hell. I bought this album in December 1976, and then left for California right after Christmas. That trip was planned, by the way, not a result of listening to the album. I believed in the concept of California as heaven on earth. Everything about SoCal was so great in 1977. It was the place to be. But of couse it really wasn't. I saw it in awe, with eyes wide open, and missed or overlooked some things. And that's the concept of this album, almost a warning that things aren't all they're cracked up to be.

Previously the Eagles' success baffled me, but I think I've got it figured out now: they brought the right stuff (dull pointless pedestrian soft-rock) to the right place (California) at the right time (the '70s). Their continued popularity today is probably more out of nostalgia and/or peer pressure ("How can you NOT like them?" say the fans. "Greatest Hits 1 is the biggest-selling album ever! If you don't like the biggest selling album ever, you don't have good taste!") than anything else.
