I bought 3 cds from amazon and was happy that I received them days earlier and excited to listen to all of them, the first one I opened was Passion. To my great disappointment, when I played this recording, half of the tracks sounded like the cd was scratched. Tried it on to other players and it's the same, while the other two cds I bought with Passion seemed perfectly fine.
Release Date October 27, 1992
Beautiful performance of an inspiring work. Solo and chorus voices clear; harmonious blend with orchestra. A great listening pleasure.
Release Date November 27, 2007
I saw the show in spring of 2007 and loved it. Couldn't believe they hadn't made a soundtrack! I was so disappointed that I couldn't leave the theater with a CD! Then 7 months later I was soooo delighted when Amazon sent me a recommendations email (based on previous purchases) and look at that, they finally DID make a soundtrack! Bought 3: one for me, one for the person I invited to join me, and one for the person who gave me the tickets! Lovemusik: great music and wonderful story.

Jennifer Westfeldt hits all the notes required for the role of Eileen, yet her voice isn't my favorite. Donna Murphy's voice is not great either. The real talent there is Gregg Edelman, but I honestly prefer him along Brooke Shields and Jennifer Hope Wills.

I agree that this is a great collection. But I have to wonder: Am I the only one who got a bum copy of the CD? The songs are all mixed up on my copy, as in, most of the tracks are mislabeled: "A Quiet Girl" is really "Tonight", The Balcony Scene, printed as "Tonight" is really "Somewhere". The list goes on.
So, who do I kvetch to? I'd like a copy that isn't a complete mishmash.

This is certainly the definitive recording of Mr. Loesser's music. It is likely the most complete recorded version we have. I personally prefer the more modernly orchestrated 1992 Cast Recording, but this is definitely the most accurate.
There are a few performances that (in my opinion) are not the best we've heard. Stubby Kaye is still the best Nicely-Nicely. Nathan Lane was a great Nathan Detroit. This album shines though with Emily Loesser's fantastic performance as Sarah. She sings the role as if she was born to do so - it easy for her. Every song she sings is a highlight, and I often end up getting just a bit excited if I know one of her songs is queued up.
All in all this particular album is good. Ms. Loesser ... Read More:

Disappointing. A "rock opera" that would have sounded dated if it were written in 1965. it is unsatisfying and totally out of keeping with the tenor of the libretto. I wish somebody would take Saroyan's novel and write a score that will endure the test of time.

Being a Rodgers and Hammerstein fan, I had to have this CD. It is a good CD to buy if you are a die-hard fan of the King and I. However, it probably isn't the best one to buy if you want just one recording of it. Donna Murphy is the best thing about this CD. For some reason, I just can't get Yul Brynner's King out of my head, and for that reason, it is harder to accept Lou Diamond Phillips. He is good, don't get me wrong, but The King and I without Yul Brynner is somewhat strange. The orchestrations are fine, and retain that classic Rodgers sound. The whole recording though, and I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, has a weird kind of sound quality to it. It is heavily compressed and has an artificial sound to it. The equalization seems to emphasize ... Read More:

If anyone goes back into that memory of nostalgia...It is easy to create good reminders of seeing, hearing and singing with Sir Robert Conducting JS Bach, Berlioz, Brahms, Mozart, Poulenc, Schubert and Vivaldi!
When anyone hears once again Donna Carter, Edith Wiens, Judith Blegen, Susan Dunn, Christine Brewer, Dawn Upshaw and William Stone it is a totally unforgetable Moment! Upon more keenly intense listening I found similarities in the voices of Edith Wiens...Judith Blegen and Donna Carter. In fact, I can exchange the songs of Donna, Edith and Judith without being sure of which is the right soprano. That is almost equal to the voice of Susan Dunn! The last two Sopranos, Christine Brewer and Dawn Upshaw are different qualities with a bit more variety of color ... Read More:

This is not the complete soundtrack to Guys and Dolls, however it is a great interpretation of some of the music. These are hit songs, with some good singing and good orchestra, for a pretty reasonable price. Also included is the song "Adelaide", that is an addition in the movie, but is taken out in the broadway play. I bought this CD for that song, and am pleased with the whole thing! Highly Recommended.
