Kofi

by: Donald Byrd

Release Date June 17, 2008
This album is some of the funkiest jazz I have ever heard. This album is to die for, the bass lines are superb, the flute playing in suave' and Byrd's timing is out of this world. Occasionally I have a few long night drives through the darkness and this album is absolutely perfect.... it makes one feel like a "mean sort of cool" and would be perfect for a good movie score. Insanely terrific.

King David

by: Honegger

Release Date March 23, 1999
I sang with a chorus that performed this years ago and wanted an English version; I already had the Dutoit CD. Most of the recording was okay; the narrator was very good and parts of the orchestra. Unfortunately, the final movement just "comes apart". It's probably my favorite, and trademark Honnegger; I was so dissatisfied, I immediately had to get out the Dutoit and listen to the finale.

CD-Charts Music : Hovhaness: Magnificat Op157; Symphony No12

Hovhaness: Magnificat Op157; Symphony No12

from: Delos Records

Release Date July 18, 1995
Here we have a religion-based symphony (with features of a tone poem), beautifully sung and played along with a number of other religious short vocal works. Hovhaness's oriental techniques focus more on "the journey" than they do on "the destination". He presents us here with a celebration of the mysterious and mystical rites, transcending materialism. You do not have to be a particularly religious person to much enjoy these compositions.

The focus of this body of work manifests the spirituality of ancient and Byzantine Christianity, favoring the community rather than the individual. The music, overall, is a nice blend of harmony, melody, and occasional dissonance.

Magnificat, opus 157, (1958) -- The basis for the composition ... Read More:

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

by: Choir of St. John's Cathedral - Denver Colorado, Donald Pearson

Release Date September 15, 1998
Having owned this CD for several years now, I've easily listened to it over a hundred times. Additionally, as an organist and choir director, I have gone to great lengths to purchase and perform several of the pieces with my groups, namely: Bring A Torch, Mid-Winter, My Dancing Day, Betelehemu, He Is Born, Do You Hear What I Hear?(hint: look for Oxford's OOP supplier), and Joy To The World.

I've recommended this recording to several people and all have echoed my sentiments, just as my choir members and congregants have thoroughly enjoyed the repertoire I've taken from it.

For those for whom only Handel "Messiah" or Bach "Christmas Oratorio" suffices as Christmas choral repertoire, this recording may not suffice: the program ... Read More:
