Sometimes live performances don't live up to to their studio counterparts, but in this case Krall adds dimension and depth to her already formidable studio recordings. Dexterously inventive, she puts improvisation back into jazz-isn't that is what jazz is all about? You'll recognize all the old standards, and some super arrangements. She knows how to swing and her up-tempo version of 'Devil May Care', to my ears, is slick and simply dazzling.

(Warning: Jazz critics may turn their noses up at all this as they seem to do when a jazz artist achieves a modicum of popularity or crossover appeal(then they wonder why jazz is an endangered species) but just ignore them-Diana Krall is one of the best to come along in a long long time)

All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio

Prior to this album, Diana Krall was not considered serious enough as a Jazz singer who could play a mean piano roll. She was a pretty girl, with a pretty voice, who would do standard jazz covers.

But this album changed all that, the trio in this record is brilliant and Diana's talent as a vocalist AND a piano player is showcased here in great abundance. It was good for her to choose a tribute album to Nat King Cole, and it results in a very good record and nice interpretations of Nat Cole's classics. It was difficult without a drummer as well

I don't have a large collection (50 to 60 CDs ), but this is one cd that i listened to so many items, i scratched it till it could not be played anymore.

THIS was the far better album of the year it lost to "SUPERSTITION" . the understated and incredibly tasteful guitarist RUSSELL MALONE . the miraculous arrangements of JOHNNY MANDEL . the sexiness and pitch perfect restraint of MS. KRALL'S vocal and piano contributions . LEWIS NASH or JEFF HAMILTON on drums . the song selection and programing of the material . the lifetime achievement award was SANTANA'S . the music is ours . the snapshot forever . the depth of this deep , sultry well will grow in stature . sans radio play . by word of mouth . just off the beaten path more traveled .

Truly, Diana Krall cannot be compared with any other Jazz vocalist, past or present. And as a huge fan of Ella, Sarah, and Mel Torme - three of the best singers ever to hold a microphone - I must admit that Diana Krall doesn't even come close. Yet, she holds her own by subtly and beautifully carving out a niche for herself in the genre and subtly redefining Jazz as we know it. The difference? Her vocals. It's the phrasing, the honesty, the raw emotion that pours from every song. "When I Look in Your Eyes," by Canadian born jazz singer/pianist Diana Krall was released in 1999, with underlying orchestral arrangements by noted jazz composer/arranger Johnny Mandel. Krall recalls that, in her first conversation with Mandel, she told him that she was both a singer and a pianist. Mandel replied," Oh, so you're a hyphenate! Are you a singer-pianist or a pianist-singer?" The singer then confirms that her favorite singers have all played piano too: she lists Dinah Washington, Roberta Flack, Shirley Horn, Fats Waller, Andy Bay, and "especially" Carmen McRae: "ultimately" Nat King Cole.
