Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!

by: Devo

Release Date October 25, 1990
While the Devo phenomenon as a whole may be somewhat time encapsulated, this debut album has absolutely remained as cutting-edge and vibrant as the day it came out some 30 years ago. Though the band already had a great satiric concept going (de-evolution), when they teamed up with Brian Eno for this project, the stuff of demented genius was created. The sound straddles punk, new wave, and the simplistic pop ditties of the sixties. The jumpy, jagged, hypercaffeinated tunes perfectly convey Devo's warped take on pop culture, and also serve to further pop as an art form. This is not a disc that I play in heavy rotation, but it sounds fresh every time I hear it, and only gets better with time.

Freedom of Choice

by: Devo

Release Date October 25, 1990
This album still is great to listen to after all these years. Devo was an integral part of my high school years. The various performances on SNL and of Fridays (the ABC 80's knock off of SNL). The best part is that they are still touring!

A lot of the subliminal sarcasm was lost on my people, especially after "Whip It" made the Top 40.

People should consider their first album "Are We Not Men?"

by: Devo

Release Date June 08, 2004
What a relief was the coming of Devo around 1978. It was the beginning of
a new kind of trend in pop music: the new wave era has begun. Of course,
Devo was the leader of the pack. Matter of fact, they were ahead of their
time. They made videos for their songs when MTV was not even born. A live
show of Devo was an experience to remember! A quarter century has passed,
and their big hits are still a pleasure to listen to. If you are an old
fan like me or a newbie who wants to discover Devo, buy this CD! Put it
on and let it play! Pleasure guaranteed!

A great collection of all the Devo songs the average listener would want. This CD also serves as a career spanning overview for the serious fan. This disc almost never leaves my car CD changer. Grab a copy for a quick Devo fix.

Duty Now for the Future/New Traditionalists

Release Date May 27, 1993
Neither of these are strong albums, and even at half the price this double disc just isn't worth it with such solid collections available.
If you want to check out what these albums have to offer without the chaff go for the anthology, or the hits/misses collections if you'd like to catch some of the quirkier tracks as well.

Even the packaging sucks. It's Devo! Where's the gimmicky album art and liners to distract me from all the unlistenable parts?

Oh, No! It's Devo

by: Devo

Release Date June 28, 2005
It is an underrated album, and much criticized at the time. Mostly because, by now, they turned 100% synth (they started as a hybrid of organic and synth instruments, and by the time this album came out, all synth.)

20+ years later, it's fun to re-evaluate how the songs in this album held up... or if they held up.

"Time Out For Fun" is a reminder to be human... The music is a bit "meh" at times, but the lyrics hit home.

I still have no clue what "Peek-a-Boo" is about (spying, spending, wanking, what?), but the digital synth sound has an organic, very cool feel to it. Watching the video helps the "ha-ha-ha-ha-ha" verses make sense; it's as if this one was meant as a video, with the idea of it being a song was an afterthought... ... Read More:

New Traditionalists

by: Devo

Release Date February 22, 2005
This CD offers the casual devo-tee a chance to really understand the evolution of the de-evolution band. By sandwiching the immediate predecessor and immediate progeny of "Freedom of Choice," the listener can truly understand how Freedom Of Choice is the missing link between organic Devo (Duty Now for the Future) and synthetic Devo (New Traditionalists).

"Duty Now For The Future" was Devo's apocalyptic warning against a wiggly world taken over by corporate culture; by the time "New Traditionalists" came out, the members of Devo had been fully re-programmed to trumpet the coming of a Brave New World.

Or had they?

Songs like "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA," "Devo Corporate Anthem," "Clockout" and "Blockhead" were harbingers of a "one-size-fits all" ... Read More:
