They are calling it Neo-classical. It's the classically trained voice, singing with some "pop" quality, and singing newer compositions including modern instruments.

Josh Groban has a fabulous singing voice, and the selection of songs on this recording is nearly flawless. I love the fact that he is helping to bridge the gap between "pop" and "art" musics.

I first heard of this cd when it was first advertised on tv in the 90's but honestly thought nothing of buying it. However in 2001 I happened to spot this cd when I was stationed in Japan and am happy to have spent my money on this cd. Due to the variety of the songs I feel that this cd is good to listen to at work , when you are spending time with your loved ones, and relaxing and nurturing yourself when you are alone. Some of the notable tracks that really stand out in a positive way for me are

"return to innocence" by enigma
"orinoco flow" by enya
"sweet lullaby" by deep forest
"tubular bells" by mike oldfield
"sadeness" by enigma

Goodness, I bought this in the 70's, I think...no one had heard of them...
then around 10 years later, they were in music stores for a bit with this album/tape..lol....I'm so glad to find it again!!!...it has always moved my soul

Essence of the Forest

Deep Forest's "Essence of the Forest" is a very good retrospective of the material that Deep Forest has released from their 1992 self-titled debut to their 2002 album "Music Detected". Spanning 15 tracks, "Essence" is a very well-assembled collection for those who are seeking a strong introduction to Deep Forest's music. Veteran fans who already have their studio albums may not find much new material on here save for newer versions of the songs that were on their first album. For some reason, I wonder why they decided to re-do the original tracks. Did they hate the originals? Though collectively speaking, it had overall decent results, it kind of makes on miss out on the original versions. However my favorite remix is their 2004 rendition of the stunning ... Read More:

Boheme

HIGHLIGHTS: Deep Forest's Boheme is easily one of the best ethno-techno albums. Not just a pale imitator of Enigma, Frenchmen Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez are avid samplers, apt musicians, and combine mostly European vocals (although some sound Asian and African in origin) on this sophomore outing with their own instrumental arrangements. The riffs are memorable, the tracks are rich and mature -- most are radio-friendly-length -- and just about whenever they're presented with, like master chefs, Mouquet and Sanchez synthesize into a delicious stew.

There are no weak tracks on Boheme, altho some arguably shine more than others: "Marta's song", which I saw a documentary on the making of on MOR Music many years ago, has a hypnotic, entrancing music video ... Read More:

The best deep forest album of all of them...An ingenious blend of electronica, techno, metallic guitars, percussion, world music sampling. WHen I listen to this cd, I get

transported to another world..a world that can never exist..a world full of sounds from every corner of the globe...the sound is so hi-tech...so so high tech...go go go and get

Interested in Deep Forest? World "electronica" mixed with passion, humor, and fantastic musicianship? You CANNOT GO WRONG with this CD. I keep buying copies to give away as gifts, and always have a couple spare.

For a live performance, the quality of the sound is really great, and I disagree with negative reviews, including the most popular one on here. The studio albums do not have the energy, soul, or beauty of these performances. As just ONE example, "Baba" from Boheme: I can hardly listen to it; the singers sound drunk or about to croak, and the "electronic effects" make the chorus sound like they are down in different wells. The Made in Japan version of this song is so different....and so wonderful.
