Not for Kids Only

by: Jerry Garcia, David Grisman

Release Date October 20, 1993
This music has that timeless folky appeal. The title is appropriate, as I can understand children enjoying the simplicity of these songs, but the songs themselves aren't "childish." They speak about simple subject matter (eg. trains) but in a respectful and authoritative way. Master musicianship as well.

CD-Charts Music : Grisman & Garcia

Grisman & Garcia

by: David Grisman, Jerry Garcia

Release Date July 01, 1991
This album is a wonderful document of two great friends playing some inspired music. Garcia's vocals are among the best he's ever laid down in the studio, and the interplay of his and Grisman's instruments on tracks like "The Thrill is Gone" and "Walking Boss" will make any fan of acoustic music smile all the way home. I agree that the classic "Friend of the Devil" is, IMHO, the best version I've heard. Jim Kerwin (on upright bass) and Joe Craven, both of DGQ fame, are also on hand to flesh out the sound on these numbers, and herein lies the 4 instead of 5 stars in my review. Jim and Joe are both super talented and I have seen them perform live with the DGQ on many occasions. However, Joe has an annoying aspect of his performance that is also present ... Read More:

Breakdown: Live Recordings 1973

by: Old & in the Way, Jerry Garcia, David Grisman

Release Date November 18, 1997
My casstte of OLD AND IN THE WAY self destructed and I had to replace it. This is what I found after searching. The playlist isn't in the same order and there are a few extra tunes but boy was it good to get this back again. Vassar Clemens and Jerry Garcia never sounded better.

CD-Charts Music : Stephane Grappelli and David Grisman Live

Stephane Grappelli and David Grisman Live

by: Stephane Grappelli, David Grisman

Release Date April 12, 1994
I've been listening to both of the recordings David Grisman made with Stephan Grappelli - this one - the live session, and 'Hot Dawg' - the equally incredible studio session with Eddie Gomez on bass on a number of tracks, since their release in the early '80's. This is the type of music to which one never stops listening - always exciting - though easy and smooth - always new shades of the riffs revealed. I was gratified to see this recording as high up in Amazon's ratings after all these years - sort of verifying for me by way of vox populi what I've felt for over a quarter century now - this was one of the best groups ever - emminently listenable - fun - and they really cook.

CD-Charts Music : Shady Grove

Shady Grove

by: Jerry Garcia & David Grisman

Release Date October 15, 1996
Folks,

I learned guitar playing Shady Grove. This is one huge CD if you are into Jerry G. If you know his history, you must have this CD and have his "Old and In the Way" album. I consider this CD Jerry's attempt to get back to folk. Shoot, I still have his Guitar Player Magazine interview.

In my opinion, Fred Holstein, now dead, his brother Ed, Pete Seegar, Claudia Schmidt, Myself, all did the same tunes on North Linclon in Chicago. I think Fred did a much better job on the tunes than Jerry does. Hey, that is folk music.

Fred did all the tunes with the idea that the tunes should be played in original form, folk music. This CD is close to the performances I was at his bar in Chicago. Hey recall Steve Goodman????

CD-Charts Music : The David Grisman Quintet

The David Grisman Quintet

by: David Grisman

Release Date September 28, 1993
There are a variety of influences that can be teased out of the music on this disc, but one of its greatest strengths is the seamlessness with which such influences are blended together to emerge as something fresh, vibrant, and utterly captivating. That all of the players are virtuosos makes this possible from a technical point of view; that they are musical poets as well infuses the brilliant playing with vivid color, vitality and emotional resonance. It's a very pure musical experience, in that it effortlessly draws in the listener and carried him/her off to some faraway place where nothing else seems to matter. As long-time Jazz fan who of late has longed for some new musical territory to explore, I've found it in "dawg music"-- like Jazz, it emphasizes improvization, ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Satisfied

Satisfied

by: John Sebastian, David Grisman

Release Date November 06, 2007
Wow, what a wonderful abum! The Lovin' Spoonful always kept that easy, happy beat going as John Sebastian does here. Add the virtuosity of David Grisman and you have the ultimate feel-good music. I hadn't heard several of these tunes in many years and it was fun cruising down memory lane with the car windows open and funny looks coming from other drivers. (That didn't keep the silly grin off my face.) If you like this kind of music, and you wouldn't be here if you didn't, buy this one right now!

CD-Charts Music : The Pizza Tapes

The Pizza Tapes

by: Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Tony Rice

Release Date April 25, 2000
These recordings really highlight the talent of these three musicians individually and as a whole. I've been listening to the Old And In The Way albums for years and just recently heard about The Pizza Tapes. I'm glad I added it to my collection the small talk and improptu riffs between tracks makes me feel like I was right there in the room with them.

Thanks pizza delivery boy!

CD-Charts Music : Yerba Buena Bounce

Yerba Buena Bounce

by: Hot Club of San Francisco, David Grisman

Release Date March 13, 2007
Review by Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
The Hot Club of San Francisco is more than a tribute band re-creating the recordings of Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli and the Quintette du Hot Club de France; the group covers pieces from many different eras never performed by the group which inspired them. On their tenth CD, Yerba Buena Bounce, the Hot Club of San Francisco, which has identical instrumentation to the French group (lead guitar, violin, two rhythm guitars and a bass), leader Paul Mehling, violinist Evan Price and the rhythm section swing like mad in their updated treatment of the QHCF's speeding locomotive represented by "Mystery Pacific" and the brisk, chugging "Black and White." But they also successfully convert modern pop songs into gypsy swing material, ... Read More:
