When Ran & Cheddar grabbed me right after one of them grabbed this album in 1981 [on cassette & LP in those days] and we went for a long drive, I had trouble getting the name of the album but the music was hypnotic and amazingly brilliant. I didn't stop listening for months cos it touched my soul. Whether the urban legend is true that this is the first real 'sampling' album or not, it IS amazing and timeless. A 'DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR [& YOUR MATES]' album. Individually, Brian and David are modern musics equivalents of Mozart and Beethoven. Together, .... heavenly! I first heard of this cd when it was first advertised on tv in the 90's but honestly thought nothing of buying it. However in 2001 I happened to spot this cd when I was stationed in Japan and am happy to have spent my money on this cd. Due to the variety of the songs I feel that this cd is good to listen to at work , when you are spending time with your loved ones, and relaxing and nurturing yourself when you are alone. Some of the notable tracks that really stand out in a positive way for me are

"return to innocence" by enigma
"orinoco flow" by enya
"sweet lullaby" by deep forest
"tubular bells" by mike oldfield
"sadeness" by enigma

Big Love: Hymnal

May David Byrne never retire. Though his pop albums likely quench a larger part of his fan base, his instrumental works nonetheless remain intriguing listens. His latest work along these lines, "Big Love: Hymnal," falls right in the tradition of his juicy non-pop work "The Catherine Wheel" (a largely early instrumental work), "The Last Emperor," "The Forest" and "Lead Us Not Into Temptation." Listeners who enjoy those albums will also swoon to this one. The music has a lilting pleasant quality at times reminiscent of The Penguin Café Orchestra. Byrne's unmistakable voice provides a thick layer of "oohs" to many tracks. I first bought this album back in '84 as an LP. I had long been a fan of Talking Heads and was curious of this new piece of material by Byrne. The person behind the counter of the music store warned me that this most likely would not be what I expected - this was no ordinary Byrne music, he said. And indeed it was not! Ever since I have been listening to this album over and over again. It is amazing how these somewhat simple compositions can make such impression. A pity that the album was not available on CD. A big surprise then to discover recently that it now is! And I was quick to purchase it. The album contain not only the tracks from the original LP but in addition some previously unreleased tracks. Look into the Eyeball

I love this guy's music. He is one of the best (and underrated) artists out there. This album was worth the money. Like Humans do, Walk..Water and a few others are outstanding songs. Some kind of lame, similar to old stuff he used to do that was slightly incoherent but still good art.
If you reeeeallly want some good stuff, try his Rei Momo, Feelings and the more recent Grown Backwards. These are KILLER and you won't be sorry if you are a DB fan. High level stuff.

Grown Backwards

It is hard to avoid measuring this album against David Byrne's previous solo work (which includes his work in 1987 on Bertolucci's The Last Emperor), and earlier contributions to the Talking Heads. Byrne is constantly evolving in his music. These are the songs of a musical prodigy now in his middle years. What they lack in the darker, edgier stylings of Fear of Music, they make up for in maturity. After establishing himself as a musical genius in the genres of punk, new wave, pop, funk, world music, and art rock while fronting the Talking Heads, he went on to explore Latino musical styles (Afro-Cuban, Afro-Hispanic, and Brazilian) on Rei Momo, an album I highly recommend.
