Release Date June 05, 2007
Another great compendium of music and spoken stuff from DJ Food and DK. A must listen for anyone with an ounce of soul in their body.
Release Date April 04, 2000
DJ Food's "Kaleidoscope" doesn't go down smooth at first listen, but after repeat plays you begin to see the subtle textures unravel. Those textures being cool 60s jazz, sampledelica, downtempo and some weird experimentalism here and there. "Kaleidoscope" sounds like a cinematic journey into bedlam, feeling one minute you're in a beatnik somewhere snapping your fingers, and the next in a car chase in Rome trying to outrun the polizia. The Ninja record label has a reputation for delivering twisted, inconsistent jazz (just listen to anything by Amon Tobin), and this spectacular release from DJ Food fits right in. Great for listening to on a dark, rainy night--I guarantee you'll be swept away!
Release Date February 04, 1997
The first 10 minutes of either CD is enough to 'sell' you on how good this album is. Very dark, serious music, and very well done. I have listened to the CD's dozens of times since I purchased this album (2 CD's) and it is just not getting old.
Not only is it a wonderful value (hi-quality double CD album, total of 125 minutes), but the music is great.
Only downside is SOME of the tracks are a little 'meh', but not in a way that would impact my recommendation of this album.
Release Date October 16, 2001
This CD was pretty much my introduction into the world of Solid Steel/Ninja Tune, and it is just good. I don't really know what to say. It keeps a moderately fast pace until the end where it slows down a bit. I have been getting all the songs that this CD is made up of, and it is kind of bizarre for me to hear how little acctual composition was done by DJ FOOD and DK, but the mix is phenomenal. These guys really prove that mixing songs is an art. If you want a great hip hop CD with excellent music and beats, just buy it. This is the sort of album that can completely change your perceptions of what music is and what it should be.
Release Date November 01, 1994
This early compilation of one one the most promising labels of the past years, shows a swell collection of jazzy and tripping beats. Whatever sounds are used, it always keeps the groove. The music of 9 lazy 9 or Up, Bustle and Out is highly underestimated.
This cd is a great introduction into the world of Ninja Tune (see also other Ninja compilations like: Funkjazztickle tricknology, Flexistentialism, and Funkungfusion).
Release Date January 30, 1996
Originally purchased this disk back in '96 when I was at University, had it stollen a few years back and just recently repurchased it...and man I forgot how much I loved it. Great beats, simple melodies and a wonderful collection of Ninja Tune artists. It's a nice Sunday afternoon just waiting to happen.
Release Date August 08, 1995
This album is chock-full of excellent early trip/hop tracks most influenced by jazz and r&b. This (and the Volume 1 edition) introduced me to trip-hop and eventually electronic music in the early 90's, and to this day I still listen to it when I want some mellow but not at all boring or newagey music to chill by. Kruder & Dorfmeister, Massive Attack, Portishead and Hooverphonic fans will probably find this record to their liking.
Release Date March 07, 2000
The extraordinary Ken Nordine narrates a story on the first track. The only problem is, the music overwhelms his voice so that we can hardly hear him most of the time. This is a problem!! Nice music though.
Release Date February 13, 2001
An interesting follow up EP to Kaledioscope, Quadraplex keeps in the theme of jazz infused electronica. it's dark and powerful but unfortunately not Dj Foods finest. "looking glass" is perhaps the finest song on the Ep which really touches on the whole feel and motive of what the members of DJ food were aiming for. "Hour glass" and "shattered glass" are basically an introduction and conclusion and by the end of the EP you feel like there could of been more. Don't get me wrong the EP is really very good, it's only when comparing to the past exploits of some of Ninja tunes finest that it falls short. On a plus side however it should almost be purchased for the cd case alone, it is really, really cool, clear with streaks of silver running through ... Read More:
