Personally, I think they could have made a way better greatest hits album than this for D'. But if they were to make the perfect D'angelo greatest hits album it would probably have to be 2 discs. But the thing that really makes me happy about this release is that they added six extra songs that were not on his previous two albums, Voodoo, and Brown Sugar. Thats the main reason i bought this album, i wanted some new D'Angelo music to listen to, as alot of people do with his eight year hiatus. Now, the six songs that werent on his previous albums, have been released before, but most of them were on no name sountracks, therefore making the songs pretty much unheard of. this was a great follow up to brown sugar. i don't really have any favorites on this one. the whole cd is good to me. but i enjoy listening to How Does it Feel and just thinking about the video that he did to it. WOW!

ok, you cant knock deangelo. but you can knock the quality of the recording on a live show. i think the recording of this album just doesnt have warmth to it. of course he does his classic tracks which makes this album good..but i cant take too much of it because all the songs sound distant.

I first bought the LP version of this "Tales of Hoffmann" when it came out in the 1960s, and even though I enjoyed it, I had many reservations about the performances of Schwarzkopf, de los Angeles, and George London. Forty years later, I realize that those great three artists have only a few shaky moments, but the rest is outstandingly passionate and fascinating. With the first-rate performances by Gedda, D'Angelo, Ghiuselev, Blanc, Senechal, and the luminous conducting of André Cluytens, this is my favorite "Tales" from beginning to end. The sound is excellent.

This is the quality collection that has been frustratingly absent from CD until now. There's nothing wrong with the collections featuring Carol Farley and Susan Graham; they each bring their own styles and interpretations to Rorem's music, and Farley is even accompanied by him (as is everyone on this disc).
