If you've never heard of CSN and you want to get an idea what these guys are all about, pick this up. Granted, it doesn't have the classics with Neil Young, but that's all right. These guys rock as either a three piece or a four piece vocal band. You can enjoy some good old-fashioned folk/protest rock from one of the original bands that did that kind of music. There's a bit of everything here. I'm really too young to see these guys in their true heyday (call it '68 to early 80s), but they are still relevant 40 years after their debut album. LOL I was 5 years from being born when they released their debut. It's all good though. I'm someone who listens to almost every type of music out there and these guys just don't get old to listen ... When I was 13, my older cousin took my brother and me to an ice cream shoppe in Westport, CT (don't know if it's still there, don't even recall the name). The shoppe had an area that sold candy, merchandise and vinyl records. My cousing bought this album for me. It was my first exposure to rock (being raised on Mantovani, Peter Nero, 101 Strings and Perry Como). The shop was a colorful, magical place, and my cousin took the lp from the shelf and put it in my hands. When I played it at home I was blown away by the harmonies and lush sounds that originated from vinyl records. This is my first rock record, and has always been my favorite.

These guys are probably the single best vocal band ever. I grew up listening to CSN&Y on vinyl (my parents albums of course). This is the cream of the crop of their early albums. The harmonizing of these guys is jaw-dropping good. Sit back and enjoy it.

This somewhat maligned album, released at the time when Crosby's drugabuse had reached ludicris proportions, is actually a lot better than it's reputation. In fact most of the music is downright brilliant.
The album consists of 2 studiotracks, amongst them Stills' poignant "War Games", and 8 live tracks, recorded around the same time as the "Daylight Again"-show (available on DVD). The band that includes the late, legendary drummer Jeff Porcaro is tight and inventive. Specially Mike Finnegan shines on organ and some potent vocals, often covering for Crosby, who isn't audible on most tracks, not even on his own "Shadow Captain".
Stills was really the man in charge at the time, contributing fine songs like "Don't Turn Your Back On Love" ... Read More:

I absolutely loved this collection. It's true that some versions are, let's say, suprising (country-ish versions....) but the collection is very, very satisfying. I'm sad to see that "American dream" is not on it, as well as a couple of other noteworthy songs, but I'm nonetheless very happy I got hold of this collection.

Although some tend to think that CSN was better when accompanied by the highly credited & overrated neil young I definitely prefer the trio. When present Neil young provided a more grungy anti-government feel to the music that I didn't prefer or appeal to. CSN alone had more polished & balanced albums when young wasn't involved. They dealt with topics of daily life & struggles of relationships whitout being too adult contemporary. There are great songs here including cathedral which is almost progressive in nature as it deals with themes more commonly undertaken by 70s genesis, yes, rush, & elp. a song before I go, shadow captain, & cold rain are great examples of more emotionally charged songs pertaining to tough days, situations, & grief. ... An interesting evolution exists preceeding this studio album. Following CSN in 1977 the trio had a falling out secondary to david crosby's drug use. Stills & Nash toured briefly in 1980-81 & started to write songs for a possible album. They also included art garfunkel & tim b schmidt in the writing possibly intending to record an album together. Atlantic records rejected this idea & wanted crosby involved. The 3 put their differences aside & went into the studio in late 1981 to record what would be a great album (the album does include garfunkel/schmidt contributions). The album is musically strong & consistent start to finish. It possesses a fresh 1980s organic pop-oriented sound. there are also many guest musicians including jow vitale, lee ... Read More:
