If you like Creedence Clearwater Revival music and don't have any (or very much) in your collection, then this is the set that has it all. Some of the early stuff before they were Creedence isn't all that good (mostly because it doesn't sound like them) but everything else they did is in this box set including live versions. Better than a greatest hits!
Release Date June 29, 1989
Chronicle was a let down for me. I guess Chronicle 1 had almost all of the best Credence songs. I actually bought this album for the song "Midnight Special" with the hope that the other songs would be as good or better. It had a lot of cover songs that I don't think they did particularly well.

There are few bands in rock history who have put together so many fine songs on so many top quality albums. Every song is worthy of being on this wonderful album, which my son so aptly describes as the Abbey Road of CCR's many fine compilations.
Almost every song is so well known that I won't try and review them one by one, although failure to mention any song almost calls for an apology. It is significant that most of them are at least as appealing now as they were when they made a huge impact on release almost 40 years ago.
Consider the almost frantic Travelin' Band, the superb Ramble Tamble, Up Around The Bend, that quickstep standard (Lookin' Out My Back Door), the Woodstock reference (Who'll Stop The Rain) and the ... Read More:

If you've heard at least three CCR songs in your lifetime and enjoyed them, guess what? You WILL find a lot to like about Green River. It's an entire albums worth of that same raw bluesy sound and style. It's just a great album if you like that sound, and nothing more really needs to be said, so please, pick it up as soon as you possibly can and experience just one of many reasons why the classic rock of the 60's and 70's deserves to be loved and remembered forever (oh, and sorry for sounding like a classic rock fanboy).

The perfect mix of rock and country music, makes the old Clearance Clearwater better than the soft Beatles, even though the clearances don't have any stones rolling.

A very under-rated, intense swampy-bluesy, album which I appreciate now even more than when it was first released. Contains some outstanding material.
Proud Mary, the most popular song, was a deserved big hit but Born On The Bayou is the best song. An intense, brooding, swampy - occasionally even slinky - masterpiece with scowling vocals that John Fogerty does better than any other man alive. Play it loud and get into the mood of the song. Magnificent. One of the greatest songs of the era.
Bootleg is an excellent, catchy tune which also is typically swampy while being laid back and ultra cool. Very under-rated; few people have heard it but when they do for the first time it is an instant success. I'm surprised they didn't ... Read More:

I play a little. I don't have the best musical ear in the world. I can't sing at all, but I swear the lead guitar throughout the whole album, all those solos that we're heard again and again, like Suzie Q, are out of tune with the rest of the band. You really notice this on a CD instead of a radio or elevator or k-mart store sound system or TV sound track (Apocalypse Now). I find this first LP hard to listen to. I was wondering if technology of some kind can bring the lead guitar solos into tune with the other guitar and bass. Hey, we've just discovered the Doors first LP ran slow since the begining of time, and they fixed it!!!!! (go read a review of the 40th anniversary mix) Maybe that's why Apocalypse Now is so surreal....

As a Creedence fan since 1968, I had previously bought Willy and The Poor Boys,Green River and Cosmos Factory. I could not believe I had overlooked this album. At the time of release I may have not enjoyed it being such a departure from previous Creedence albums but I have to say I found it to be outstanding. Some of Fogerty's experimentation is a little far-fetched but you have to appreciate that he was trying to reach beyond the bayou. Any serious Creedence fan should have this CD.
