if you have ever wondered what it was like to wander the streets of old Havana at dusk, this is the cd for you. Old world charm, bittersweet songs of sadness, romantic love stories and upbeat melancholy musings turn every day into a sunny day. Grab a mojito and enjoy!
Release Date October 14, 2003
This CD is a colorful compilation of rhythm and mood, vibrant and full of life. Compay is an inspired and tireless musician, it is hard to believe that most of the tracks were recorded when he was in his nineties. His music is a wonderful walk on the streets of Havana, blessed with soul and colour. Enjoy!

This is without a doubt a great album made up of classic Latin songs (not just from Cuba, since you also find tunes like Gardel's "El Dia que me Quieras"). However, I have a problem with it: I don't enjoy the fact that it's been put out as a Compay Segundo album, when in most of the songs, due to his age, it's not even his voice that stands out (or is listed as Lead Vocals at all, for the matter, Hugo Garzon appears as such in most of the tracks).
As a son of a Cuban-born music-loving woman, I was raised listening on and off to some of these tunes, so I love them, but I hate the feeling of exploitation that this album exhudes. Unlike other Buena Vista-related releases, such as Ibrahim Ferrer's or Ruben Gonzalez, where they ... Read More:

Compay Segundo's rich, throaty voice is a perfect accompaniment to the twangy, slightly out-of-tune armonico guitar he plays on here, which makes "Lo mejor de la vida" a step up from a couple of his other recordings, especially the windy "Calle Salud", which I thought was too top-heavy with clarinets and saxophones. Compay is always at his best, but the accompaniment here truly shines, a fine sugar coating on the tip of this pungent old Cuban cigar.
The reviewer below was dead on. Segundo's sound truly is unique and irreplaceable. This is definitely "the best of life". Great stuff! Get it.

Born on November 18, 1907 in Siboney, Cuba, Maximo Francisco Repilado Munoz (better known as "Compay Segundo") died of kidney failure on July 13, 2003 in Havana, Cuba. Farewell to an unbelievably charismatic and talented musician. Known for his sporty, Borsalino-style hats and trademark cigars, Segundo was truly young at heart and rich in sound. He reemerged in popularity in 1997 with the Buena Vista Social Club documentary and CD. With the passing of segundo, the world has lost a truly unique and irreplaceable sound.

Francisco Repilado (aka Compay Segundo), now nearly 95 years old, is a living legend. He's a unique man who plays a unique instrument -- a hybrid of the tres and the guitar created by Compay to suit himself.
No point in duplicating the description of the music so well provided by previous reviewers. Listening to it is a joy. For fans, this is a "MUST HAVE" CD.
The numbers on this CD come from recording sessions spanning half a century and include popular Cuban songs that Compay made famous and that made Compay famous in Cuba, in Europe, and finally in the US. Several are his own compositions. If you can only afford one of Compay's CDs, then this should be the one.
To those who enjoy this CD, let me HIGHLY ... Read More:
