I can be rather picky when it comes to Broadway musicals, but You're a Good Man Charlie Brown is at the top of my list along with Wicked and Phantom of the Opera. Mix great vocalists and performers with funny lyrics and catchy tunes, you've got You're a Good Man Charlie Brown. A light-hearted show, I would recommend this musical to anyone who loves Peanuts, Broadway, or hilarious and entertaining songs.

Some nice songs (the title song, "Snoopy" and "Happiness") make this a charming piece. However, it is a minor musical and somewhat uninteresting for adult listeners unless you've seen and loved the show. It might attract kids since it's inspired in the popular comic strip character. It's a "chamber" musical, without spectacular orchestrations and similar to THE FANTASTICKS in that respect, although the Ton Jones/Harvey Schmidt piece is far more superior. The recording is excellent, considering it's a 1967 show.

I love the combination of singable melodies and clever (and sometimes even thought-provoking) words. Winston Clark's perfect arrangements and impeccable piano accompaniment provide highlights both for the wonderful (and, let's face it, some not-so-wonderful) songs. I have listened to "I Love a Lad" about two dozen times, and it still gives me goosebumps when she sings "and one day it will sift away." What a choice of words!

Celeste Holm made a return to theatre for The Utter Glory of Morrissey Hall, a flop musical. It tells the tale of a battle in average British girl's school between the Fifth Form, the Sixth Form and the administration and I believe love (of a heterosexual variety) is involved. Celeste Holm is the headmistress in all this chaos and, at least on disc, does not distinguish herself in a score that does the same. Clark Gesner as the composer does not even come close to replicating the charm that is to be found in his earlier hit, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Still it is always a treasure for collectors when such a rare, never-to-be-seen again gem resurfaces. Besides, the title is always fun to roll around on the tongue.
