At least according to an article on Wikipedia, Clannad disbanded in about 1997. However, they reunited at the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow in February 2007. They expressed a desire to produce a new studio album, but nothing more has come so far. They also began touring again in March 2008. If this article is true, then let's hope they crank out another CD sometime soon. This would certainly explain the large number of compilations.

If you like Enya then you will like Clannad. This is where Enya got her start (most if not all are relatives of hers) and although Clannad's music is more upbeat "traditional Irish music" than Enya's, there is still a more "etherial" sound to many of their songs. Some songs are in English and some are in Irish, but they are all great music.
Release Date January 28, 1997
Clannad is a genuine Irish band, well known for their haunting music that is a mix of traditional Irish and modern pop and jazz styles. (As a footnote, the popular singer Enya got her start with Clannad!) The music itself is hard to categorize - would you like to call it New Age, or Easy Listening? Well, it's sort of both, and really neither. This is great music, relaxing and thoughtful, almost religious in tone.
I love this album, and enjoy playing it just about all the time. I really love Ancient Forest and Buachaill On Eirne, but they are all great tunes! I highly recommend it to everyone who loves good music!

I bought this CD when it first came out and to this day it remains one of my all-time favorites. Some of the songs are hauntingly beautiful. I love the lead singer's voice.

I am absolutely amazed at the high reviews this CD got, when in my opinion it isn't good at all. I bought this at a thrift shop hoping for a good Celtic CD, well definitely not what I got. The first two or three tracks were great, I mean you could definitely feel the Celtic influence in the drums and the violin river dancing sort music. When it started going up in the tracks, the whole Celtic influence disappeared altogether in my opinion. It became western guitar music with Texan sort singing. I am not understanding how the coffee shop, western guitar mixed music is Celtic in any way. LAter on there is also some piano music involved. I am not saying the tracks themselves are bad, but I really feel that this CD mistitled beyond belief. If you even listen ... Read More:

As a hard core Moody Blues fan, I read an article about Tony Clarke producing this album in the Moody Blues magazine Higher and Higher. Since Tony Clarke did a fantastic job with the Moodies, I thought I'd try this album out and see just what it was like. The article I read indicated that Tony Clark was asked to produce Clannad's Legend album, a task which he under took. He was supposed to incorporate the sounds of the Moody Blues, Alan Parsons, and Pink Floyd rolled into one. Again, Tony Clarke came through. Legend is one brilliant album and if you listen closely, you can hear the Parsons, Moodies, and Floyd influences in this recording. This is one of the best recording I have heard in a very long time. It is relaxing, a bit New Age yet quenches the thirst ... Read More:

Clannad's album FUAIM, released in 1982, marked the end of their purely traditional phase, here the band began to use rock and jazz elements. FUAIM, "sound" in Irish, consists of only traditional songs, most in the Irish language, but modern instrumention is added.
FUAIM's standouts are "An tUll", featuring excellent traditional drumming, and "The Green Fields of Gaothdobhair", a sweetly sung paen to the band's hometown in Ireland's County Donegal. The long and complex "Ni La Na Gaoithe La Na Scoilb?" manages to combine modern instrumentation with traditional instruments that doesn't compromise the original style of the band. The song features keyboards by the band's little sister Eithne, who went on to sell millions of muzak-ish new age albums under the name ... Read More:

Discerning which is Clannad's best album isn't easy ... "Anam", "Banba" and "Landmarks" are all very worthy contenders, but I think "Lore" is the best of the lot, albiet by a small margin, as their albums are very consistent.
There are certainly no weak tracks here. Opening with the brilliant, dark and atmosphereic "Croi Croga", followed by the upbeat and feelgood "Seanchas", the album continues without letting up on beautiful moods that are deeply moving, right through to the end.
I hope Clannad continue to release albums, as the world needs inspiring music like this. An absolutely great album.
