Cars - Complete Greatest Hits

This is the pinnacle of "marketing the same songs". I remember when Greatest Hits albums were it - you put one out and you were done. Now, there's repackaging, and new editions, updated remasters, and the phrase "Complete Greatest Hits" just strikes me as odd. I mean doesn't the concept of "Greatest Hits" mean that all of your good stuff is there? So why would songs on a "Complete Greatest Hits" as opposed to just "Greatst Hits" be as good? If those songs were as good as the original batch, wouldn't they have been on the first edition? This seems like marketing twaddle to me.

Anyway, the songs on here are fine. The Cars are one of those groups where I never really bought their material, since you heard almost all of it on the radio ... Read More:

While Van Halen were redefining metal with their debut album in 1978, The Cars did something even more improbable the same year -- they invented a new kind of rock: "new wave". Since the Cars had created a perfect album with their 1978 self-titled debut, it would be nearly impossible to top it. Instead of laboring long and hard over a follow-up like many '70s bands did after a huge commercial success, the band cranked out their sophomore effort, Candy-O, almost exactly one year later from the first LP. And while the album was not as stellar as its predecessor was, it did contain several classics, resulting in another smash album that solidified the band's standing as one of the most promising new bands of the late '70s. Obviously this is the new waviest of their albums. It would've been nice to hear some more guitar, but there are still some great songs. "Drive" and the title track I cannot get enough of.

Shake It Up

I remember being disapointed with the polish and the silly title track
(it's far better live)but this album I now find far more likeable
I always liked Ocasek's quirkiness and they do stretch with "dream away"
other strong numbers are opener "Since your gone" "Cruiser" "think it over" and the percusiion of "Maybe baby" definitely eighties
and not anywhere near as good as there debut or Candy O
and not as interesting as Panorama
but still as I said better then I remember

Interesting then as it is now. I love the fact that the music critics in '80 just didn't get it - it's a moody, techno-post-punk album full of angst, alienation, and self-doubt. But unlike the band Suicide, a band that Ocasek admired, the melodies always come back to a, "there must be meaning to it all", bridge. Call it existential music, dude.

Classic Cars, pun intended. The only song I didn't care for was Heart Break City, all the other the songs are fantastic. You won't go wrong buying this one. Highly recomended.

OK I picked up this album because it was supposed to be the new Blink.
Well its more hardcore punk. Some of the songs I really, really dont like. A few were actually good, but most were just ok. If i had previewed the cd first I most likely wouldn't have bought it.

Back in 1996, Rhino Records had plans for a Cars rarities disc entitled Prototypes, which was to include their entire first album in demo form, as well as other rarities from all eras of the band. And even though Ice magazine ran a story on it and a track listing was set, the album never saw the light of day for reasons unknown. Three years later, Rhino reconsidered (helped by a fan write-in campaign), and issued a similarly assembled package, The Cars: Deluxe Edition.
