Burial is coming out of nowhere. He's publicity-shy, he's not touring and he concerns himself primarily with his beats. The palette is parsimonious: all is very sparse, but it never feels bare or cheap. Clearly, there are lots of influences here. Whereas the previous album was a nice crossover of dub, Drum & Bass, and Boards of Canada (!?), this one has an almost trance and garage feeling with eurotrash voices coming from another planet. There are echoing synthesizers that seem lifted from AFX Ambient Classic II and early Autechre (say, Garbage). The album is infectious and almost danceable (again, in a different planet). But the best thing about Burial is that his sound is instantly recognizable. It is original, honest. Given the intimate ... Read More:

Playing this cd, i see a small human, not so deep under ground, but in a distant place carving into his self made cathedral out of greyish marble where the interior does not reflect the shiny source of light that appears in there.
Not one has ever noticed this place nor him until he said "could it be..."

After The Burial are smart fellows. They even know their math! The following is an explanation of the writing process for their song "Pi":
Pi was written and recorded only a few days before the completion of the Master copy, at around 10 am, with a couple of serious hangovers. Justin and I had talked about having a classical guitar intro into some sort of heavier riffage, but we weren't quite sure what that was exactly going to be.
We remembered back to a few weeks prior, when we were throwing around an idea of using the mathematical constant Pi, and incorporating it into some sort of complex breakdown pattern where the kick drum corresponded to each number as the figure progressed. Kinda creating the ultimate mind boggler of a riff. The complexity ... Read More:

It's criminal that both The Burial and Skin-Deep aren't household names for lovers of '80's era British Ska. Except for some cuts on compilations, this is the only time I've found material by either of these bands. There's an abundance of catchy tunes on this disc, mostly working in the vein of a potent combo of Northern Soul, Punk, and Ska.The Burial even get a little folky in some of their songs. Think Billy Bragg with more of an attitude, especially on "Just Above My Head", the stand out track of the whole CD. For their part, Skin-Deep lean more into the Ska line of things, but with unusually introspective and even melancholy lyrics. You won't find any of the generic "rude boy" or "pick it up, pick it up" silliness here that so often plagues the genre. ... Read More:
