1976 was an epic year for great albums - Eagles' 'Hotel California', Jackson Browne's 'Pretender' and J.D. Souther's 'Black Rose' to name just three - and 'Silk Degrees' is right up there with the greats.

Commercially, 'Silk Degrees' was a slow starter, looking like it might sell 200-300,000 copies. But DJs gave "Lowdown" a lot of airplay, word got around and the album became a five-million-seller, charting for 115 weeks and yielding three hit singles. Truly a breakthrough album for Boz Scaggs.

When initially released in 1980, the album marked a culmination of seven solo releases by Boz Scaggs in the 1970s to 1980 and his virtual disappearance from the music scene until 1988. To say it was a puzzling compilation back in the day is an understatement, since Scaggs was having great chart success and headlining top concert venues nationwide, like the Blossom Music Center in northeast Ohio.

The reissue makes more sense, since it is a nice overview of a prodigious recording period for Scaggs and is a nice sampler for listeners wanting to delve into his music without diving into multi-CD retrospectives or live recordings.

As noted by other reviewers, the CD is an after-the-fact remix. It's reasonably faithful to the music, but it lacks the transcendent, diaphanous reverie of the original vinyl mix. This tracks are 5-plus, but the mix brings it down to a four...plus.

Trivia note: Background vocals by three sweet ladies, one of whom, Donna Thatcher, married Keith Godchaux, then returned to Muscle Shoals in her post-dead career.

My review title? I'd thought this was released AFTER "Dig" and "But Beautiful" -- now, I realize this CD is the "missing link" -- Boz is making the transition here to cool, genre-busting (iTunes classifies him as "jazz"), seductive hipster.

The "old" Boz is here (in Dolby 5.1 and in full color, on the DVD side) -- still hitting the high notes in "Lost It," and bringing the same feel to his classics ("We're All Alone"), but his unplugged "Lowdown" really allows one to hear the scolding tone (3 decades of mumbling along with the song, I now understand the lyrics!). The samba tempo for "Simone" (formerly almost disco) gives the song a more classic, mature sound -- I can imagine even those from the Big Band era being able to dance to this. ... Read More:

Although I am a Boz Scaggs fan - I was surprised to find this set of CDs to be a disappointment. As many artists will, Boz takes a new direction with most of the songs in these performances. His interpretations are well outside the bounds what what I had expected. Unfortunately I don't think these new directions benefitted the recordings in most cases. Its a shame because I really do (otherwise) like his style.

Moments/Boz Scaggs and Band

Had these albums when new. & Band is the bluesier effort, but Moments gives a better range and preview of coming albums. Moments concludes with a beautiful instrumental piece that I have been waiting years to get in digital format.

I am a huge fan of Mr. Scaggs and I own just about every release he has put out. (The Japanese imports are wonderful).
This album is pure, upbeat blues and it is happening.
Buy this disc for your morning ride to work to get you moving, and get the album, "Fade into Light" for the evening with a glass of wine and time with someone special.

My Time: The Anthology (1969-1997)

The first disc is great. It would have been better with more songs from the first "Boz Scaggs" album w/ Dwayne Allman. Way too much disco/funk on the second disc. There's alot of tasteful stuff he recorded that is not included in this set. Where's "Freedom for the Stallion", "Make My Life Shine"? Unfortunately it looks as if you're going to have to get the individual albums/CDs(especially his earliest first four) to get most of the good stuff.
