"Feed the Tree" was a smash of sorts in 1993, and it remains a great single, a true indie hit to rank with (almost) The Smashing Pumpkins "1979" in terms of pure catchiness. A lot of the rest of this album is pedestrian, and after the stong opener "Someone to Die For" the next three songs, 13 years later, sound dated and absolutely disposible. But the record manages a couple other genuine highlights, including the oddly seductive "Slow Dog," "Gepetto" and the elegaic closer "Stay." Not a great album, but holds up better than anyone in 1993 could have imagined.

I just listened to this album after a long hiatus and was very surprised by its consistent quality. I am most definitely a Breeders/Belly/Kelly Deal/etc., partisan but speaking as objectively as I can Tanya Donelly serves up 11 very solid tracks here, though some are more solid than others (4 may be my favorite...).

Out of Bounds: Journey Through Modern Rock

Though the selections date from the early 80s through the late 90s, the disc as a whole has a current freshness about it! I was surprised to see how many albums these bands cut over the years and to this day they have cult followings. Some of them have gone on to do other things. Danny Elfman of Boingo fame is a well regarded TV and film composer with such credits as "Batman" and "Tales from the Crypt". We all know the B52's
still get air time! So if you don't want those typically syrupy
pop tunes that so many other collections comprise of; you won't be disapointed with this set. A technical note: All the songs run without track gaps, adding to the continuity of the concert feel.

These four disks are recorded on analog audio tape. The only one existing of Leadbelly. The recodings were made on two or three seperate nights. Since the first night leadbelly didn't bring his guitar he sings acapella most of the first disk. The other three disks have his 12 string acompanyment. The sound quality becomes very apparent here. Unlike most of his records you can hear all 12 strings! It sounds beautiful. Another benefit of these being on audio tape is that Leadbelly can potentially play a song much longer than in prior recording. However he seldom does. Being more informal than a recoding studio ti also gives insight as to what Leadbelly's set list may have been like at a concert or everyday party. Though these individual song versions ... Sweet Ride: Best of

I've been writing reviews for a lot of Belly stuff. They're usually long and descriptive. Not this time though. Buy this album! It is amazing! If you like 1990's alternative or just chicks who rock, this album is essential. There's great break-up, make-out and scream your lungs out songs. It's the best of everything. A few great Belly songs are missing but the album overall is a classic.

Feed the Tree

Feed the Tree may be Belly's 'big hit' (and the first Belly song i ever heard), but Dream on Me (also on this single) is also a great song. Cryptic and melodic, i had it stuck in my head for weeks. Sometimes i wonder why songs like Dream On Me didn't get onto the albums. Perhaps they weren't 'pop'ish enough for mass consumption, but they're lovely all the same.

Seal My Fate

This CD has, other than the title track, Spaceman, Diamond Rib Cage, and Think About Your Troubles. Spaceman is one of my favorite belly songs, it's sorta eerie, and has classic Tanya Donelly lyrics. Think About Your Troubles (a cover of a Nilsson song) is great too. Diamond Rib Cage isn't bad, but it's not quite up there with Spaceman.

This is one of the best belly singles (in my opinion anyway), along with Now They'll Sleep. I think some of Belly's best music is on the singles, not the albums. But it's all good music.
