Having bought Asia's double-CD 'Live In Osaka' upon its release in 1997, I hadn't seriously considered spending more money on any of the other "official bootleg" releases. I was tremendously disappointed with the Osaka discs, primarily because they come from a show recorded by an audience member who sounds as though he is sitting outside the venue. Four years on, with the benefit of several reviews of 'Live In Philadelphia' which cite it as the best of the lot, I decided to purchase it. This concert was recorded by Rick Nelson on professional equipment. Although it is not a soundboard recording, the quality is surprisingly good. What I mean is that this one isn't as heavy as "Aqua", but it still get 5 stars by me. The second with John Payne. I think this is the exact edition I have, but I don't have the bonus track. "Summer's Gone" sounds at first like a song from the '70s (i.e. America), but then the synthisiser reassures you. I still have more to get from this half of Asia.

I have the UK edition released in 1998 on Eagle Records, found in the bargain bin. However, mine has "Wildest Dreams" instead of "Kari-Anne" on the Japanese and U.S. version. Can't win 'em all! It was nice to hear these songs live instead of the endlessly recycled studio material (see "Anthologia"). "Starless" and "Book of Saturday" are from John Wetton's previous bands King Crimson and UK. Geoff Downes does likewise (Buggles w/superproducer Trevor Horn) with the keyboard solo of the song that christened MTV's maiden voyage over two decades ago.
