This cd is a "best of" encompassing the years 1988-1997, Asia's prime period for great prog-rock. If you're an Asia fan there isn't anything new here. But if you're just discovering the band, here is another flawless set to get started with.

This is a really good disc. The band do a great job interpreting their hits from the 80's with a new guitarist. If you're expecting the songs to sound just like the studio versions on Asia, Alpha and Astra, you'll be disappointed. But they sound great anyway, at least if you're like me and actually like a little something different thrown in.

For the most part, that something different is Pat Thrall. No, he does not sound like Steve Howe, and yes it took me some getting used to. He definitely brings his own sound to the mix, but it's still good. The only song where I really missed the embellishments of Howe is "Only Time Will Tell," where Thrall, who is very good, takes a back seat for some reason and lets the other three ... Read More:

I remember reading somewhere when this album was released that this was an 'Official Bootleg', as if in some way the word bootleg excused the appalling sonic quality of this release. It doesn't. Like much of Asia's output in the nineties, either with John Wetton or his watered down mini me, John Paine, this is, for the most part, tosh. The mix is appalling, rendering in particular Pat Thrall as potent and relevant as a eunuch in a sperm bank. It's instructiive, I think, that on my version at least (put out by Eagle Records), no-one is credited with producing this mess. Wetton, usually such a competent and rewarding vocalist sounds strained and off key through much of this ordeal, with keyboardist extraordinaire Geoff Downes the only man to escape ... Read More:

This was the first studio album with John Payne. He had started working with Geoffrey Downes in 1988 on session work. He was picked to replace John Wetton. Some fans weren't happy about this. I didn't even wanna know about this at first. My first copy was a French import (MusiDisc) I found. I wish I kept it, though it was scratched when I found it. Then I had the US edition (JRS/Pyramid/BMG), which had tracks rearranged and "Little Rich Boy" removed for some reason. Then I find this edition, with a bonus track that's already on "Archiva Volume 2". The sound was improved though. Then InsideOut released the latest edition in the West.
