Annie (1977 Original Broadway Cast)from: Sony Release Date September 15, 1998 I believe it was 1978 when my parents bought me the original broadway cast recording of Annie on vinyl. It was my favorite record of my childhood and now I'm grateful to be able to have it on CD and play it for my daughter. And while not everyone may appreciate it...I'll admit I got a big misty when I heard the first public performance of Tomorrow (track 27). While it horrifies me to think that there are people out there that truly believe Aileen Quinn was a better Annie than Andrea McArdle, it's nothing new to me either. My parents took me to see Annie on Broadway at the Alvin Theater in NYC for my 7th birthday (Allison Smith was in the role at the time) and shortly after that, the movie debuted. I bought it primarily for "Together, Forever" from Gypsy, though its nice to have the Broadway version of "Send in the Clowns (I believe by Glynis Johns). But it is just a sampler, and fans of Broadway music are probably better served buying the full original cast recordings. |

Broadway - The American Musical (PBS Series)from: Sony Release Date October 19, 2004 Of course there should have been much more. I remember there been a Metropolian Opera series called CAST ALBUMS- 100 YEARS that was put out for a limited time only and had like five volumes. As Peter Filichia noted they left out SHE LOVES ME, BRIGADOON and SWEENEY TODD. Also nothing from PACIFIC OVERTURES, BIG RIVER, CHESS, CRAZY FOR YOU, JEKYLL & HYDE, TITANIC, THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, FOOTLOOSE- THE MUSICAL, THE FULL MONTY, URINTOWN... But they couldn't have put it all. I would have done without Lee Remick's "Anyone Can Whistle", because the show was a flop. I guess because it was Sondheim's first "serious" show... |

On Broadwayby: Andrea McArdle Release Date April 11, 1996 This is a somewhat difficult to find title, but well worth the effort. Ms McArdle has had a marvelously strong voice since originally creating the role of Little Orphan Annie in the Broadway production of "Annie" (aside: I was lucky enough to catch her in London at the Victoria Palace Theatre, and I don't recall ever having as much fun at a musical production either before or since). In any case, the now grown up lady is all too underrepresented on CD, and if you like show tunes, this eclectic grouping will leave you wanting more from this terrific singer. Her rendition of Never Never Land is straightforward and breathtakingly lovely. Some of the other choices are curious and a matter of taste(too much Lloyd Webber for me), but her interpretations ...
