This is a phenomenal CD of fabulous music with two of the greatest "Jazz men" of all time. Probably the single greatest CD I have added to my collection in years. Crisp, on time, and deep melodies as well as the perfect duo make this CD worth the money and probably one of the first I will wear out.

... what's really missing is his stellar contribution to the "Night Shift" movie soundtrack, "Girls Know How", a catchy uptempo number with great horn charts.

I only wish I could have seen Al live in concert during his 80's prime!

Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration

I don't listen to all the tracks on this recording, but I've all but worn out 8, 12 and the final track, the Halleluia Chorus. Stevie with Take 6 is masterful, as well as Al Jarreau on the all-star big band session. The one disapointment that kept me from giving it 5 stars was the recording quality. I wanted to use Why Do the Nations... with Jarreau to audition a pair of high-end stereo speakers in the store, and the band sounded like they were recorded in a shoe-box. Unfortunate for such great musicianship and arranging.

This Time

Al Jarreau.... The name speaks for itself!!!!!! He is one of the most talented male singers of our time. It's just a shame that kids can't take the time out of the nonsense called RAP to really listen to how music should.....I mean beautiful music and singing should sound like. I love this whole CD from beginning to end, I purchased the album back in 1980 only knowing that still to this day this CD still plays a very important role in my life style and up bringing. I highly recommend this work of brilliance to any music listener, that can really appreciate great lyrics, melodies and singing.

Recorded in 1981, this classic Al Jarreau album, "Breakin' Away" was first introduced to me on an LP format by my younger sister who loves jazz and classical music as much as I do and was once a classical piano teacher who greatly influenced and molded the musical sensibilities of her young students. This is the very first album that made me appreciate his unique vocal artistry, and soon after, I bought my own copy when it first came out on a CD format. Considered as one of the best vocal jazz albums ever recorded, I never fail to listen to it every now and then. Tenderness

Sorry, but with all due respect the Sergio Mendes, this version of Mas Que Nada surpasses the original. The sound quality, the arrangement, Al's voice, the musicianship...it IS better. I LOVE music from brazil, and if this song was the only one on the CD, I would STILL gladly buy it. Helping Al "bring home the bacon" here is the brilliant playing of Marcus Miller (bass) Joe Sample (panio) Eric Gale (guitar) and Steve Gadd (drums). Gentleman, your playing on this song is out of this world!!!
Oh yea, the rest of the songs are great too!!!

L Is for Lover

Almost any CD from this gifted singer, is a delight for your ears! "L Is For Lover", not being one of his best, is certainly an excellent addition to your Male Jazz/Pop singers collection. I don't know exactly why there is now a "shortage" of Al Jarreau's CDs in the market (perhaps it is due to that usually stupid fight between record companies for copyrights &/or royalties), but if you have the chance to get it, do it right now! (I had to buy mine as a used one -a German issue, the sound quality is outstanding!).
