Roy is at the top of his game and the supporting cast is as star studded as it gets. I bought the HD DVD version... simply great. I did not give it five stars because there were were more than a few out of focus shots. They really show up in HD on a very large display.

After enjoying this you just have to wish all the great artists of the 50s and early 60s could have got at least one live performance of this caliber down for future generations to remember. Sadly so little of what is out there is not recorded in a way that is suitable for high quality transfer to the new high definition video and audio formats.

This historical drama is inspired by a true crime from 1947, the murder of Elizabeth Short. The film opens with a riot in 1945 Los Angeles. Sailors were attacking the "zoot suiters" because of a prior attack on sailors. There is a plan to stage some boxing matches to help pass a municipal bond issue. There is a domestic scene that is supposed to mean something. Some of those hats don't have the wide brims of that era. Was the fight realistic? Do those scenes of entertainment have a meaning? There is a sudden shoot-out. Next police cars arrive where a body was found. [Do those scenes inside a home look too upscale?] The internal organs of that body were removed by the killer!

Tony Bennett is like a fine wine that only improves with age. At 80, his voice is perhaps better than it's ever been. The material on this DVD from his DUETS album is impeccable and each one of his guests (with the possible exception of Stevie Wonder, who destroys "For Once in My Life") brings charm and style to the table. I would give this DVD full marks except for one extremely annoying thing: the "Tony Bennett is wonderful" interviews are slotted in DURING songs! Come one, guys: let us see and hear a full take of a song. Do the interviews after the songs or in a group at the end of the DVD. Don't interrupt the song for them.
