This is a perfect DVD for showing family or friends why you like "great singing."
This gala performance celebrates the 50th anniversary of the reopening of the Vienna State Opera--and they do it in a way they can be proud of.
At the beginning of several pieces, they intersperse photos of performances from 50 years ago with some of today's top performers in classic roles.
After the first solo--Ferrucio Furlanetto's rich voice and ultimate personification of Leporello in his "Madamina, il Catalogo e questo," from Don Giovanni, you think to yourself, "How is anyone going to equal the quality of this magic moment?" You don't have to wait even minutes: Edita Gruberova responds with Donna Anna's "Crudele?" ... Read More:

Into the ornately decorated oblong concert hall, said to have the best acoustics in the world, 2000 well-dressed patrons crowded on New Year's Day 2007 to enjoy the annual New Year Vienna Philharmonic Concert - the conductor Zubin Mehta. As usual the event was telecast throughout the world. Also on hand were a team of DGG camera and recording personnel, and the result is this splendid DVD.
On the program are 5 items apiece by brothers Johann and Josef Strauss, 4 by their father, 1 by their brother Eduard, and 2 by Josef Hellmesberger. Of the Johann items I especially welcome the waltz "Wo die Zitronen bluhn", apparently a favorite also of Zubin Mehta. "I love this piece," he said, "and I've never done it before with the `Wiener'." ... Read More:

I wish reviewers would review the product at hand without comparing to other recorded versions. No singer or opera performance is similar and should be reviewed based on it's sole merits alone. Larin is not Corelli, Casolla is not Nilsson and Frittoli is not Moffo. Just think how boring opera would be if every singer and opera performance was exactly the same. As a Chinese-American, I thoroughly enjoyed this lavish performance. From the Chinese perspective, it is a great honor that a magnificent composer such as Puccini would have been enthralled with our culture to write Turandot. To bring Turandot home to Beijing is an honor long overdue. Of course for such an important homecoming, Zhang Yimou, the greatest director in China would be asked to direct and produce ... Read More:

For me this is the best Nupen's film about Jackie. It has "Who was Jacqueline du Pré?", "Interlude with Johannes Brahms" a previously unpublished interview and "Remembering Jacqueline du Pré". It's more than 3 hours of music and words of people who knew her best to enjoy and remember the best cello player of all times.
"Heart-Stopping arcchive footage" The Times

The film begin with the backstage of a concert and you can see that people necessary but invisible. Later come the stars, the players and the director. All of them are workers, all of them are making art. Here you realize that when Whistler said ART HAPPENS, it's only part of the tuth, art is work, it doesn't just happen.
It's not a bonus track, finally you can enjoy a magnificent Mehta's version of the Ravel's classic.
From time to time is hard to agree with the Academy, but in this case, when Bolero won the Oscar, there's no reason to disagree.

To the person who gave the lowest rating -
If you had bothered to read the description of the CD you would have realized that it was a biographical documentary and NOT musical content. I was so pleased to find biographical material on the person with such an exquisite, incomparable voice. In my opinion it rates at least a 6 and would get a 10 from me if it had even 25% music content to go with the biog.

It's difficult to do opera even poorly, and nearly impossible to do it well. The art form is staggeringly collaborative, and --- unlike cinema --- is utterly dependent on all factors combining in the right way at each unrepeatable, uneditable moment. So... take Puccini's swan song, TURANDOT, his grandest, if not his greatest, opera; now, present it in a city that has never produced western opera but that is the fictional/historical setting for its plot; make certain that your thousands of collaborators and artistic leadership do not speak the same language; and finally, add the less-than-creative tension of a totalitarian government determined that the entire enterprise should reflect well on both current leaders and the ancient culture. No wonder this film is so fascinating! Reviewers ... Read More:
