For those that don't know, The VeggieTales series features animated vegetables that teach children history and values while telling an entertaining story. Bible verses area a key part of that mission, but, the teaching is done in a gentle way and does not heavily push a religious agenda. The latest installment works on the idea of helping others.

After a very funny preview of "The Pirates Who Won't Do Anything," the video opens with the vegetables meeting in book club fashion. My kids (3 and 5) really love this and since they have also watched Wizard of Oz many times, they like to compare the two.

It didn't captivate me enought to watch the whole thing, though.

My son's favorite part of this DVD is the theme song. He sings it non-stop.
He also seems engaged with the other songs on the DVD. My personal favorite is the Belly Button song, which is cute parody of an N'Sync-type boy band video.
I think he's still too young to understand a lot of the religious aspects of the stories, but (despite the title) it really isn't overtly religious or preachy. The first story on the DVD is loosely based on the story of David and Goliath, but the biblical aspects are actually pretty subtle. It's really more about the fact that "little people can do big things." And, for the limited time that I give him to watch TV, I'm much happier having him watch DVDs with a positive/educational message than exposing ... Read More:

VeggieTales - Minnesota Cuke and the Search for Samson's Hairbrush

My kids range in ages from 11 to 5 and although the 11 year old won't admit it, even he can't get enough of Veggie Tales.
Minnesota Cuke, played by the magnificent Larry the Cucumber is in search of Samson's hairbrush. He's like a veggie version of Indiana Jones, except Minnesota doesn't quite have Indie's confidence, although he does run into trouble just as Indie does, not just with his enemies, but trouble within himself.
It's a heartwarming tale about having strength in the way God made you.

VeggieTales - The Complete Silly Song Collection

Lots of songs for the price! My 2 year old loves this DVD set, she's not quite old enough to sit through an entire DVDs but when she watches for the first 5-10 minutes she'll get up and dance or jump around while the songs are going. I could see this being a lot of fun for older kids because each DVD is like a karaoke DVD becuase you can follow along with the lyrics.

A neighbor loaned me their copy of this dvd the other day to watch with my toddler and I had to order a copy of our own because he loved it that much! Even though he's seen most of the material on other dvds or in the series, this is still a great compilation and perfect for when we don't necessarily have time to watch a whole dvd. (We do the same with the Silly Songs dvds, too ... pop one in just long enough for one or two songs while getting ready to head out.)
