If there are any actors today that can fit into chaffs and cowboy boots, they would be Clint Eastwood & Robert Duvall. Duvall has stated in an interview that of all the roles he has played as a character actor, none fit him better than that of a cowboy. This film is in a sense a continuation of his roles from "Lonesome Dove" to "Open Range" in which he plays a seasoned cowboy who has to fight the bitter elements, human and natural, in order to get the job done. Duvall is ably supported here by Thomas Haden Church who in a break from his comedic roles, is excellent as his long estranged nephew who joins him on the cattle drive. I'm sure there are many reviews of this book already since it is rather "old". However, I'll add my two cents by adding that it is a great book. It has caused me to read all the other Shaara (both Michael and Jeff) that I can get my hands and eyes on.

First, let me say that I've read every novel ever written by Jeff Shaara and have loved every one. Having said that, I think this is one of the worst Civil War movies I've ever seen. It was dull, over-acted, and the screenplay was horrible -- filled with flowery speaches, no real character development, no real-life conversations. I can understand why all these "South will rise again" folks like it -- it's pro-confederacy, hardly mentions the word "slavery", and makes it look like all the southern slaves just loved their "masters". That's OK though, as all films are made with some bias. It's mostly just a rotten script.

Not an easy movie to review. There's definitely symbolism here and, as most other Lynch films, it makes sense, even if only on some deeply subconscious level. Was it an interesting ride? Yes. But did I enjoy it? No. I didn't enjoy it not because I didn't "get it". I didn't enjoy it for the same reason I wouldn't enjoy looking at a car crash, or at a dead body in the morgue. Yes, I may stop and stare, just like scores of others, gripped by morbid fascination and compelled by my illogical, contradictory human nature. But I would not enjoy it. I HAD THE EXPERIENCE OF ENJOYING WATT STAX FROM BOTH THE MOVIE AND LATER THE ALBUM AS A YOUNGSTER. I KNOW HOW GOOD IT WAS IN IT'S ORIGINAL FORM. UNFORTUNATELY I WAS BLINDSIDED BY THE CD DUE TO THE COMMENTATION OVERIDING THE MUSIC THAT SEEMED TO NEVER STOP IN LEGNTH OR IN FREQUENCY. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? THIS SHOULD HAVE COME WITH A FLASHING WARNING. DROVE A FIVE STAR PERFORMANCE DOWN TO TWO.
