CD-Charts DVD : The Last Waltz

The Last Waltz

starring: The Band, Paul Butterfield, Rick Danko, Dr. John, Emmylou Harris

Release Date May 07, 2002
The movie is the movie. If you have seen it, it is wonderful. Classically done and arguably the best rock and roll documentary made. The Blu-ray edition is what makes this so special. The clarity of the performances both visually and audibly is astonishing. The presence of the performers and the subtle nuances of their performances are presented in this high def format beyond what you could hope for. The bonus interviews with Scorcese and Robertson are also worth a gander. Just to hear the clarity of perspective from a long time after the fact.

CD-Charts DVD : A Hard Day's Night

A Hard Day's Night

starring: Lionel Blair, Wilfrid Brambell, Deryck Guyler, Kenneth Haigh, George Harrison
directed by: Lester, Richard

Release Date September 24, 2002
The other night I decided to pull out HDN and watch it for the first time in several years. I have both the MPI and Miramax DVDs so I reached for my good old MPI edition and popped it in. The 1.33:1 aspect ratio always bugged me a bit but I thought "so what" and decided to watch it because I love the opening "I'll Cry Instead" prologue on that version. When the movie got to the "And I Love Her" sequence I started, for the first time, to notice that the mix was different than the video tape I'd seen years ago. Paul's vocal, which should be single-voiced on the main verses, was double tracked throughout. During the song, the director's assistant positions George's amp on an amp stand. When George tries to lean against it, it falls and in the original ... Read More:

CD-Charts DVD : Yellow Submarine

Yellow Submarine

starring: George Dunning (II), John Clive, Paul McCartney, Geoffrey Hughes, Ringo Starr
directed by: George Harrison

Release Date September 14, 1999
Next to "A Hard Day's Night", this is my favorite Beatle movie. I thoroughly enjoyed Yellow Submarine when it came out in 1968. I purchased a VHS copy when it first came out in an affordable edition. I wanted to upgrade my tape to DVD. But, c'mon fellas, $25 for a 40-year-old animated film by Peter Max?

This DVD better come with blotter acid & a Nehru jacket from Carnaby street! Oh, and if I have my choice of surviving Beatle to deliver the disc, send Ringo! He knows "It don't come easy"!

CD-Charts DVD : The Point

The Point

starring: Ringo Starr, Paul Frees, Lennie Weinrib, Bill Martin (IV), Buddy Foster
directed by: Fred Wolf

Release Date March 23, 2004
I used to watch this movie when I was little out at my grandparent's house. I loved it then, and I love it now. I didn't know it had been released on DVD until recently, but I am glad I found it. I am planning on introducing it to my nephews and nieces in the near future.

The songs are fabulous, and the animation is great. My favorite is "Me and My Arrow".

I did notice I caught a lot more of the subtleness of this move now than when I was little.

If you haven't seen it, rent it or buy it and watch it!!! It's definitely a must see!!!

CD-Charts DVD : The Beatles Anthology

The Beatles Anthology

starring: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Neil Aspinall
directed by: Kevin Godley, Geoff Wonfor, Bob Smeaton

Release Date April 01, 2003
I purchased this documentary on VHS when it first came out (for about $100! ) so that should tell you how I feel about it! If you are a big fan (big- not "moderate" or "casual") you'll eat this up. Besides the early never before heard recordings, photos, performances, and interviews, the stories told by the Beatles and their close associates are just fascinating. And what's great (and pretty funny also) is that they don't always have the same opinions or recollections on events surrounding the band. For example, it seems apparent that George Harrison disliked Beatlemania but Ringo sounds like he really enjoyed it. Also, it's great to learn that despite the eventual acrimony they were very close to one another, something else that makes this worth watching. ... Read More:

CD-Charts DVD : Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band Live 2006

Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band Live 2006

starring: Ringo Starr

Release Date July 08, 2008
I own and have watched all the Ringo Starr All Starr Band DVDs but this one is just about the best. Sheila E. again is present as the companion drummer and she does "Glamorous Life" again but that doesn't get old or commonplace. She is dynamic and can play with the best of them - as Edgar Winter found out. He is the one who stole the show. His ballad, "Dying to Live" is sung to pull heartstrings while he solos at the keyboard. Later in the program he staps on the keyboard for "Frankenstein" then plays sax, timbales then back to the keyboard for the finish; drumming courtesy of Sheila E. The in-between spots with all the performers add humor and insight to the tour and to the people involved. Ringo freely admits "see you later, peace and love!" when it came ... Read More:

CD-Charts DVD : Imagine (Deluxe Edition)

Imagine (Deluxe Edition)

starring: John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr
directed by: Andrew Solt

Release Date December 06, 2005
John is my favorite Beatle, so I really enjoyed watching this documentary about his incredible life. Although by now some of the film footage has been issued in other films (this was after all made in 1988), not everyone has seen all of the films and documentaries made about John or The Beatles, and it's always a treat regardless to see interviews and film footage you haven't seen before. Among the great moments are the confrontation with cartoonist Al Capp during John and Yoko's bed-in, John's heated argument with a female journalist who thought turning in his MBE was some empty protest, interview footage with John's aunt Mimi, and the bonus feature of an interview with John's former schoolmaster. The film is also loaded with great songs, many of them accompanied ... Read More:

Where to start, where to start....Well, I see on the main menu a 'Artist Index', so I decided to check out the Electric Flag first. And man they were in full flight on this day! Ripping through "Drinkin Wine". Everyone in the group is just smilin' ear to ear-thrilled to be up on this stage in front of the festivals second day Saturday afternoon crowd. I have a new idol. He's the bass playing big papa bear cool cat with the cheshire cat grin, the shades and the bushy goatee-one Harvey Brooks. Just watchin' this cat during this song always makes me smile :) This clip gives you a taste of the super smooth blues guitar of Mike Bloomfield and the fresh off the soul circuit Buddy Miles in white shirt, tie and suit thumping his drum kit like nobody's business. great footage.
