For ages I have been familiar with this opera, and once upon a time designed costumes for it, too. This version was somewhat different, but very good. The settings didn't always appear as though it was the cigarette factory or the café of Lilas Pastias, but the acting was good and the singing excellent. Not a recent production, it still shows how good Jose Carreras is. Unfortunately Samuel Ramey didn't seem as convincing as Escamillo as he could have. Though a smaller role, it is nevertheless very important to the story.
The music of deutsche grammophon has always been well known and looked for and overall it is hard to fault the Metropolitan and these performers. James Levine leads the ever fabulous orchestra as well. I give it ... Read More:

To the person who gave the lowest rating -
If you had bothered to read the description of the CD you would have realized that it was a biographical documentary and NOT musical content. I was so pleased to find biographical material on the person with such an exquisite, incomparable voice. In my opinion it rates at least a 6 and would get a 10 from me if it had even 25% music content to go with the biog.

Diana Ross is mesmerizing on film! In this DVD of Christmas in Vienna, she is a match up against 2 famous opera tenors and a kids choir, singing Christmas favorites in English, while the others sing in their native tongues, and they blend beautifully!
It's always a pleasure to hear Diana with a full orchestra, but with these 2 opera tenors, she truely is a DIVA!
Release Date March 22, 2005
This is an excellent concert. Singing and orchestra are great as are the selections. The comments between selections do not, in my opinion, add anything and are not worth hearing more than once but can be skipped using the skip button on the remote.

Running Out of Time (Imanol Uribe, 1994)
You know, as much as I love Javier Bardem, and I do love Javier Bardem, sometimes the force of his acting ability simply isn't enough to carry a movie. When you combine Javier Bardem with a good amount of nudity, and you're still checking your watch every five minutes, there's something very wrong.
The plot concerns a Basque separatist (Carmelo Gomez) involved in a scheme to blow up a police station in Madrid. Once he gets to the city and moves into a tenement house, he finds himself attracted to his next door neighbor Charo (Ruth Gabriel). Through Charo, he is exposed to the underbelly of life in Madrid-- drugs, prostitution, gangs, police harassment-- and finds it more fascinating than his terrorist activities, ... Read More:

As of November 2007, this is the only DVD of the Berlioz Te Deum. This is a massive and powerful perfomance in Franfurt's Alte Oper, an opera house transformed relatively recently into a concert hall with spendid acoustics and a terrific pipe organ. Additionally, the rich hardwoods of the hall and the gleaming organ pipes are beautiful to look at. The close-ups of singers and orchestral musicians are well placed and well timed.
Jose Carreras sings the tenor solo with his usual high standards of musicality and personal involvement, but overall he does not seem comfortable with the part, as he shifts back and forth between light head tones and a heavier, more operatic chest sound.
Ironically, the excellent concert hall is the only substantial problem with ... Read More:

Unfortunately I cannot give a rave review of this concert. Many of the items make the orchestration appear heavy and labored. And there are a few strange noises coming from the orchestra from time to time. The performance lacks sparkle and the toe-tapping appeal that Strauss has.
The sound is in PCM Stereo or Dolby Digital Stereo which is probably a reflection of the age of the DVD. However if you have a good sound system, you can get a reasonable sound. Perhaps it could even be argued that the somewhat flat sound field reflects the fact that this is an outdoor concert and adds to the feeling of "being there". Setting your amplifier to "Music Video" gave me a wider sound stage but absolutely no depth.
The panoramic views of Vienna are wonderful and it is ... Read More:

This is a beautiful concert by Jose Carreras who I greatly admire. I watch and listen to this dvd and every time I enjoy it more and more. The songs are enchanting, and the orchestra and conductor are fascinating. This dvd is a treat for all of us who are Jose Carreras fans. I do have a complaint, and it is that the cd version is not available and I can't listen to the concert in my car. I had this dvd for a long time and nothing out there compares to it.
