The Magnificent Seven (Special Edition)

starring: Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Eli Wallach, Robert Vaughn
directed by: John Sturges

Release Date May 08, 2001
This movie was made in the days before film-makers realized that people were sophisticated enough to recognize corn when they saw it. Horz Bucholz's impetuous kid act was just total corn. Talk about bad acting. Robert Vaughn deliberately affects some kind of bizarre weakling voice quality.

The whole premise of the movie was that the villagers were wothless cowards but Bronson goes off his head proclaiming how brave they are because they're dirt scratching farmers. The 40 banditos ride into the village and the hired guns(the seven) expose themselves in positions where they could easily be shot by less than half of 40 banditos.

The banditos get the drop on the seven when the seven return to the village and the ... Read More:

The Professionals (Special Edition)

starring: Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, Woody Strode, Jack Palance
directed by: Richard Brooks

Release Date April 05, 2005
Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan and Woody Strode make this flick great. Hired by a train baron to bring back his kidnapped wife, they soon find that all is not what it seems. The acting is terse and intense and, for all the twists and turns, you're still left wondering what happens next when the movie ends. Not a lot of gunfights and explosions, although there's enough to satisfy. Instead, it's the mental game of cat and mouse that takes the forefront here and delivers pretty good.

CD-Charts DVD : Cronos

Cronos

starring: Claudio Brook, Daniel Jiménez Cacho, Luis De Icaza, Jorge Martinez de Hoyos, Federico Luppi
directed by: Guillermo del Toro

Release Date October 14, 2003
How my ratings work:
5 - I really liked/loved it
4 - I liked it
3 - Could've been better/worth a look
2 - Just didn't live up to the potential
1 - Simply aweful

Reworking the vampire myth is no easy task, but writer/direcor Guillermo Del Toro pulls it off in this creepy, darkly funny, and surprisingly touching tale of a man trying to gain back his humanity (literally). The work that went into this film is amazing, especially the creation of the Cronos device. Instead of babeling on about how good the film is, I'll just say that this is a movie worth watching.

If you are a fan of old films, and especially old Mexican films, this is for you! If not....well read the reviews and make up your own mind. This is an interesting view of the Mexican Revolution, which we in the US don't know that much about, so on educational grounds only, this is worth seeing.

Visually it is lovely although the DVD version apparently doesn't live up to the original. The acting style is very much typical of the time, with the proud brunette beauty spewing fire out of her eyes in most every scene. One man commented on how enticing her arrogance was....so obviously this was a prized trait in the culture of that time. For me, I found her one-dimensional acting style a little wearing...so much fire and ice...with little subtlety to make her more interesting. ... Read More:
