This is a very good documentary; lots of great footage. It really seems like a fresh retrospective. Some of the other stuff that's come out between 'Westway' and this, seems to have less to offer than 'This is video Clash', the late '80's quickie compilation. GREAT STUFF, from the beginning to the final incarnation of the band (i think the last album was a little better than the reviews, but not as good as what Husker Du was generating at that time). WHAT A BAND! I think Mick Jones had the right idea musically, during the Combat Rock period. Too bad we couldn't see a continuation of that.

I knew Joe Strummer in person long before I knew him.
I only come to realize who he was now.
He was a good man. (Choir sings Bob Dylan song: He was a friend of mine)
This is the saddest film of my friend that could possibly be made, and the best.
Okay, so he was not actually my friend. He was friend to all who met him and made everyone happy without distinction. I met him in 1987-1988 during the filming of the movie Walker. A kinder, more diplomatic, funnier man has never breathed.
In this film while seated on a sidewalk with a diverse group of teens, he is asked among other bizarre questions would he prefer to be a garbageman or a doorman. He chooses garbageman. Gets to hang off ... Read More:

I am a big fan of The Clash. I can't wait for the new Joe Strummer documentary to come out. That said I watched The Ramones:The End Of the Century documentary and then this one right after. The Ramones doc was GREAT. The Clash one was just ok. I just didn't think it had enough interviews and it had annoying graphics in between each subject that were visually ok but that were left on the screen for what seemed like 30 seconds each before they began talking again.

Among music documententaries, End of the Century - The Story of the Ramones fits squarely in the middle. On the one hand, for any fan of the Ramones it's hard to criticize it. On the other hand, the *VH1* treatment of the band seems like a *one size fits all* type of approach that could have been greatly improved upon. It's still very good, but the Ramones deserved a documentary that was great.
Like most rockumentary fare, the vast majority of this one is made up of cut and paste interview segments of most of the major players. The interviews are sliced and diced to fit chronologically and create drama in the movie. On the one hand, they did a very good job in editing these various clips. On the other hand, the final result seems at times ... Read More:

For die-hard Clash fans, rather for fans of the late 1970's English punk movement, this movie is hard to resist. An eclectic group of musicians and actors, including Joe Strummer, members of The Pogues, Dennis Hopper, Elvis Costello, and Jim Jarmusch, this homage to Spaghetti Westerns is wonderful. If you get it. For those who might necessarily appreciate the actors, the humor may be lost.
This project was director Alex Cox's immediate after Sid & Nancy, the story of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his violent love affair with Nancy Spungen. In fact, Courtney Love may have been channeling Nancy for her role in Straight to Hell. She is the only truly bad addition to this movie. Her annoying and insescent screaming was hard to get through at certain ... Read More:

If you love poetry, rage, dream, passion, exigency and romantism ; if you think that beauty can be an ideal and cinema can be new ; you will love "Docteur Chance", a jewel of cinematic poetry.

Alot is not in English, nor are there subtitles. The interviews are in English, talking about Joe from pre Clash to the end, some very moving some also heard else where( the interviews have German subtitles) so even if you dont speak German you can get mos of what its about, but has gaps, also the book is in German so if you dont speak it you are a bit lost. but still good. Paul is Missing, they to everyone but no Paul>>>

Much like its independent counterpart in reference "The Punk Rock Movie" which was filmed by Don Letts. This film more than deserves a DVD release in both America and the U.K. in both region formats. If you've got the money to buy a region free player fine, but if your like me you don't have the dosh to waste on extra electronic gizmos!
I saw this once back in the eighties and it stuck with me much in the same way as the Letts film did and "Urgh: A Music War", "UK/DK", and the "Punk on the Road" film as well. It is worth your time as a viewed document of what it was like optically and not by some 1st, 2nd or 3rd word of mouth requiem opinion either then, now, or at a later date to be read in black and white print. These days everyone and the brother it seems has a book out ... Read More:
